modern choice of jungle rifle

I'm a fan of something in 6mm or 6.5mm rather than 6.8, especially if its being shot out of a m4/m16 rifle. I haven't been too impressed with the 6.8 but thats me. That said, I wouldn't be too pissed if I were handed something in 5.56 either.

Nope,. not a CZ marked canteen, that's a WalMart special. Yes, that IS a factory 20 round mag, and you would not believe the fun it was getting that one! Ordered in December of last year, delivery last month. Not the facilitators fault by any means, but WHAT a pain! He said he will never go through that again, so I guess one is all I will ever have. :(

I missed Vietnam by 2 years. But i'd take an m16 any day as long as it had a chrome lined bore and chamber, forward assist, and a cleaning kit (basically the current generation of M116/M4 weapons).

SKS, just like the ergo much better than an AK, and it has been extensive proven as a great carbine,

the PS-90, or the 5.56 variant, I believe that it is smaller than a collapsed M-4 and still has a good length of pull.

Now me personally, I'd take a paratrooper special SAW, if you've never seen it, well that is bad.... out of a little barrel
and all at about the same weight as m-14

Bummer, I would love to have a few. I greatly prefer a 20rnd mag in just about anything. Heck, I wouldn't even mind waiting 6mo. for it. :(

Here's what I'd take...a FN 2000 re-chambered in 6.8. Its light, feels natural in the hands, compact, has a rubber seal around the mag so nothing can get in it, and the only way foreign debrie can get in to the rifle is if you fall barrel fist in to mud and it gets either in the barrel or shell eject tube. In that case, like any other rifle, get a stick and poke it out.

I also wouldn't mind a properly made akm/ak47. But I'd prefer and more modernized sks over the ak. Its more accurate and just feels better to shoot. And no I don't mean the mall ninja sks. Something a mad scientist would cook up in a Russian machine shop.

Although I love the AR platform, I too believe that the SKS is an excellent and under rated weapon.

:what:

I thought the all but a few of the modern battle rifles had the pistol grip configuration. (AK family, Stoner platform, FAL, AUG, Galil, etc.) The only oddity I can think of offhand (I'm no expert by any means...) is the little Buck Rogers looking FN thing.

Is there really a debate anymore between pistol grip or traditional rifle configurations?

As a footnote, I've always loved the M1 Carbine, IMHO it was the perfect tool for a very specific job.

For Jungle warfare I would choose a nice, factory -new AK-103 in 7.62X39. It's more accurate than an AKM. 7.62X39 is a great "brush-buster" cartridge. If one insists on a western cartridge, then maybe a piston driven AR shooting one of the new 6.5mm rounds.

I too love the M1 Carbine, it seems that everyone who shoots mine instantly falls in love with it...but, it ain't no M2 Carbine. I think the M2 is better suited to the task. Additionally, I think the P90 would make an outstanding platform to chamber the .30Carbine in, and would be just about perfect for jungle warfare, as well as for CQB, tankers, and other specialty missions requiring a light, short rifle. Of course FN refuses to build it because it doesn't use their own proprietary (read: expensive but inferior) cartridge. :banghead:

A bunch of Claymores and a radio and my Vepr AK. Most firefights in Nam less than 50 yards in the jungle mountains, farther in the rice paddy flat lands.

I Almost forgot, a good knife and an engineering battalion

nothing beats spider holes and claymore, except maybe punji sticks...
learn, don't repeat.

para saw would be my 1st choice as well....
