I wasn't sure if this was the best venue, but traffic seems to be higher here, and it is for a rifle....

Anyone here tried the Burris XTS red-dot? I'm curious about it considering that the Aimpoint it is designed after is around twice the price.

Use: range and home defense - mounted on an m4gery. Unless I can get it allowed at work, I'm not banking on using it for anything harder than your average carbine class or local match.

Considering all of the options, what would you choose?

nope, havent tried it, or the aimpoint.

when i was looking for an optic for the AR i tried the reflex, tri-power, and did some tacrolls with the eotech at the shop (was more like a controlled tumble, as fat as i am i still cant do a fast roll).

hated the reflex, loved the tri-power, kind of liked the eotech. could tell it would be great just for funsies, but the reticle of the tri-power lends itself to a lot more accuracy (needed for those impromptu shooting competitions at the range).

i dont think i'd have been unhappy with an aimpoint either.

Do you know why the Tri-power is not more popular than it is, spiff? I can't see why it wouldnt be. It's like a 1-power acog, which would be great for general purpose use. The chevron ought to give better accuracy at longer distances too. In my eyes it should beat the Eotech or aimpoint since it's got so many power backups, and since it adjusts itself automatically.

So what gives? Is there some drawback to the sight that I'm missing? Right now it's my favorite reflex type sight, unless someone can give me info as to why it shouldn't be.

when it was first introduced there was supposedly some design flaws, i have no idea what they were, maybe someone else reading this can chime in about them.

trijicon claims that the tri power was a big hit, and they decided to redesign it. i'm told that manufacturing them was tough on the equipment so they were going back to the drawing board.

i emailed trijicon and the response i got was basically 'we cant tell you what we changed on the tri-power but its really cool!' i'm hazarding a guess that the next gen tri-power will have a better tritium lamp and the collection of light via fiberoptics will be more on par with current acogs. meaning, brighter, during day, and more adjustable in low light.

probably going to be more expensive as well.

Maybe the good fellow meant death, taxes and price hikes were the only sure things in life. But who knows..

Anyway, I will have to check out the new one. Thanks for the info!

Do you happen to know when they think that model will come out?

Try the PK AS from Tantal. This is a current issue Russian 1x red dot BUT it hase a 1moa black dot in a circle that is independent of battery power, AND it is available with a weaver style base for AR rifles.

There are two 1x red dot sights chosen by serious users as a primary optic -- (1) Aimpoint M/M2/M3, (2) EOTech.

In my opinion, the Aimpoint is the better choice because the battery life WAY more than the EOTech and its controls are easier to operate.

Why was the Tripower never really a contender for common usage, Zak? Or more to the point, if any notable problems they had in the past were actually fixed in this new model, what would prevent it from becoming another staple optic? The chevron and it's ability to make some rough range estimates ought to give it some real advantages, to my mind.

The best answer I can give is that the Tripower attempted to enter the market relatively recently (last few years) and never really caught on due to some initial release delays and problems that were discovered. You might be able to find details about the faults in the original model somewhere on AR15.com, but I don't think anybody is posting about the features of the new one.

Also note that the EOTech has had historical problems but its latest revision seems to be more durable.

I bought a aimpoint 2000 some years back :( for a custon 10-22. Used it maybe 5 times and it sat in the safe with no batteries in it. Pulled it out for a rabbit hunt this summer and couldn't get it to work. Sent it to AP and they sent it back as they could not or would not fix it. They gave me a credit towards a new scope for maybe $100 off. I sold the scope and credit on ebay for $17. I would buy one from China for $39 before I would buy anything from aimpoint. Just my 2 cents worth. Ken in Oregon
