I started a new thread so as not to hijack another. Some time ago, I acquired some moly-coated bullets and was planning to use them as-is. But in this post, barnfrog removed the moly coating. I'm curious as to why. Any thoughts?
The box of 42 were the moly-coated bullets, and today I finally got around to cleaning the moly off with Barkeeper's Friend.

I shoot a lot of moly bullets In rifles one thing to remember is the barrel has to be clean (no copper) or it will cause pressure changes. The same thing goes getting all the moly out of the barrel before going back to just copper jackets.

I've never seen any evidence either way. I have seen a little more powder is required for velocity. I've never been to concerned switching but I do keep them clean.

In the instance I was referring to, I was going to use the bullets to add copper fouling to my barrel. Can't do that with moly coated bullets. Didn't take much work, and there weren't many bullets. If I had full boxes of moly coateds I would find someone who could use them.

My son shot moly bullets deer hunting for two years. I don't think he shot two boxes and his barrel was black with moly. His groups were fantastic. Problem: in order to keep shooting that way he could only shoot moly. He tried shooting copper and we couldn't tell where the bullets were flying; maybe the moon? Taking the moly out was no fun either. My gun smith told us to get a non-abrasive paste from Brownells and it took almost a week of scrubbing until it was all out of the barrel. Go into any gun shop in 2014 and try to find .270 Win moly bullets. At the time we could only find them at Cabelas. So when we were U'pt North and run low on ammo, what the heck would one do? Now I understand Nosler bought the rights to moly coated bullets and I didn't see them mass producing them either. Another problem with moly is it can trap moisture and fouling under the coating and against the rifling which will lead to pitting the barrel.

You can moly your own that’s what I do, I use a dry media tumbler with .177 cal BBs and moly powder about 3hrs later you have perfectly moly bullets

I've had the experience that 2 of my AR's that shot moly coated bullets, did not shoot naked bullets well after. Just my experience.

I think that it was a fad that has largely gone away. Not many real benefits and some trouble if you want to clean the moly from your barrel. I've never heard of anyone cleaning the moly from the bullets but that's what I'd do if I wanted to shoot them.

Back in it's hay day I use to run moly coated bullets because it was a thing. I used to like not having to clean as often, accuracy was great, and coated my own using the vibratory tumbler. Finally got tired of messing with it and went back to regular bullets with no issues. Eds Red with the acetone will cut the moly followed by Butch's Bore shine. After that I always follow up with a good coating of Kroil until I'm ready to shoot again...ymmv

Is moly a clear coating, or colored?
Sorry, havnt heard of it. I'm an amateur

How many rounds do you think one would have to shoot with moly bullets to see a difference going back to bare bullets . if you only shot say 10 would you bother cleaning the gun before going back to the bare bullets ?

I Never go back and forth without cleaning with sweets 762 due to erratic pressure. I mostly use moly now on stuff that I’m pushing past 3500fps keeps it from copper fouling

Is the sweets 762 the only cleaner you use ? would something like boretech or hoppes # 9 do the trick ?

It came and went back when I was shooting Benchrest matches. I tried it like many did, gave it up, never really saw a benefit.
I think the part of departure here may be maybe that some of us use bullets that come Molly coated while I don't believe it's worth the effort to actually coat bullets if they come that way from the factory I don't have a problem with them . I have some lapua scanners that came that way from the factory and there's not a chance I'm gonna damage them then trying to clean them off. Also the lapua Molly coat doesn't get all over everything the way that some of the other types do like from hornyday

Hoppes#9 would probably work I only use sweets when I want to complete strip of the barrel then finish with Karol oil to put some back in there

Thanks for your thoughts on the #9 TEXASJD. it was only 10 bullets so it should come out easy it would seem .

I have shot thousands of moly coated bullets in an AR-15 for High Power matches. I coated them myself in a tumbler, as was mentioned. I only used bullets and the moly powder, no BB’s. I ran the tumbler for about 30 min, then add some sawdust into the tumbler and run for another 5 minutes. It cleans any excess moly powder off the bullets and polishes them. It works great. The moly does not come off in your hands while loading the bullets.

One of the claimed benefits was less throat erosion. I think it’s true but don’t know for sure!
