I have a Marlin 1895 GS rifle with an 18.5" barrel and I am looking for the largest chunk of lead that I can push out of the barrel. I live in grizzly country and like to fish and spend time outdoors.

Many years ago my father had a friend that was a reloader and worked with the .45-70. He and my dad were talking about a 650 (???) grain bullet... anyone out there know anything about it?

+1 on the Garrets, I carry the 540 gr solids. Remember to shoot them in the shoulders first.

Where in Alaska ? ,I live in Fairbanks in the winter and Pelican in the summer, we see lots of bears.

Barns used to make a 600 grain .458 which you could handload , unfortunately you will have a powder capacity problem as you increase the bullet weight , and have to seat the bullet farther back in the case, IMHO.

500gr hard cast is more than enough for your needs. If you don't handload do as suggested above and buy some of the Garrett ammo, it's good stuff.

The 540grn is about the largest slug that will work at the OAL the Marlin will handle. Garrett loads these, as the others pointed out, and they are superb. If you want maximum penetration and precisely zero deformation, try the Punch bullets from Belt Mountain. They are turned on a screw machine from a lead filled brass stock. They have a super thick jacket, a flat meplat that punches clean holes like a cookie cutter, and a lead core that gives extra weight over a brass solid of the same size. Not the heaviest bullet available but they out penetrate just about any other type. If you don't want to roll your own, Grizzly Cartridge Co offers them preloaded in a +P loading that gives 2050 FPS and 3700+ftlbs for about $5 a pop.
