Montado hammer for my Blackhawk?

I just got the Ruger catalog in the mail and I love how the hammer looks on the Montado...would love to put one in my Super Blackhawk. Does anybody know where I can buy the Montado hammer? Is Ruger the only source...and will they even sell one to me without buying a whole Montado?

Ummm...the Montado and SBH hammers are basically the same thing. The checkering pattern is different, that's all. And in my opinion, the SBH pattern is the better layout. From a side view you can't tell the two apart, it's that close.

The new small frame and the SBH frame differ only in their length, I believe.
I dropped a SBH hammer into my 50th Anniv .357 blackhawk (the small frame) with zero trouble. Bought it from brownells, I'm sure. Dunno if the Vaquero hammers are different, but I doubt it.

Yeah, but I know Ruger is generally against selling you anything unless you have a gun with a serial number that came with that part from the factory. I was hoping some place like Brownells might have one...

I like the look of that Ruger. The hammer has the look or a Colt hammer. With a bird's head grip frame and that short barrel it'd be something!

The Montado hammer looks more like a Colt Python hammer than anything ever found on an SA.

Not that the SBH is any more authentic . Both are very much late-20th-century designs.

You could re-shape the SBH hammer into something closer to the Montado hammer but...I fail to see the need. The SBH hammer was a good original design by Ruger.

Well, like you said, the SBH hammer and Montado are essentially the same minus the checkering...and I doubt that's something I can do with good results. I've never really liked the feel of the grooves in the stock hammer. Plus I just like to be different.

I guess I'll probably just have to wait a while until I see something at a retailer or maybe in the classifieds. Or maybe I could find one in a gun shop and steal the serial number so ruger will sell me one.

The bordered checkering is reminiscent of first gen Colt SAA hammers, that is what it is mimicking. The overall shape is Rugers. I don't see the Python resemblance myself. Maybe I need to look more harder!

Well yes and no. Umm...see, from side view they're identical. From the top, not so much...forget the checkering, the Montado hammer has a "teardrop" shape while the SBH looks like a squared-off ping-pong paddle.

You could round an SBH hammer into the overall shape of a Montado hammer. Checkering would still be SBH-ish.

I don't believe uger will sell to a non-dealer/smith any parts that would require fitting. I treid a month ago to no avail yet my brother, a gun smith/dealer, was quite able to so I placed it through him.

There's the additional potential issue of whether they'll sell anyone a part for a non-standard gun. But, you never know until you ask.
