I am picking up this redhawk on Monday and know nothing about "moon clips". I have bee reviewing various articles and read that the Ruger clips are not the best - susceptible breaking and bending. I want to buy more than the three they provide but know nothing about size, thickness, etc. Ruger site doesn't provide guidence. Too, prices run from a whopping $75 to $10. Anyone with the Ruger Redhawk 5032 or is well versed with clips have some facts and/or recommendations? Much appreciated.

No experence, except with S&W, but
Standard .45 ACP full moon clips will not work as they are too thick. The special full moon clips from Ruger are thinner and made of spring steel. Insertion of .45 ACP cartridges as well as removal is much easier with the Ruger full moon clips than standard models which are available.
From - http://americanhandgunner.com/ruger-convertible-redhawk-45-colt-45-acp/ The S&W clips were hard on the hands to remove the fired brass. There was a tool made that helped. Do wait for more replys.

There was a tool made that helped.

There are indeed.

These tools aren't necessarily inexpensive, but in my estimation they are well worth it (as are all good tools). On the other hand, some fellers have whipped up their own rigs at home for installing and removing cartridges and brass...

This is the recent thread where I learned of the BMT Mooner and the De Luxe Moon Clip Tool.

Check with Ranch Products, they make moonclips for several different applications, often in different thicknesses, and may be making them for the new Redhawk.

Look online for Polymer/Plastic moon clips for the Ruger that are made from Rimz or EZ Moon Clips. There are two types with one being flexible and the other being a little more rigid. Both can easily be loaded and unloaded by hand without any tools and hold the rounds securely. I gave up on the metal ones a while ago and just use these now.

Ruger lists a 3 pack for $14.95 on Shopruger.com. I just put money on a convertible Redhawk and also read about the flimsy moon clips. I'm going to see if anyone does make plastic/polymer clips.

Understand that the Ruger requires its own specific clips.
Those made for any other brand gun WILL NOT FIT.
It's not just a matter of thickness.

If you find another source, ASK FOR CLIPS TO FIT THAT RUGER MODEL.
If you buy clips for S&W, for example, they will not work in that Ruger.

You should not need a de-mooner tool. The Ruger clips don't fit the cases that tightly.

Also understand the convertible Redhawk will not shoot ACPs as well as the Blackhawk does.
They are two entirely separate animals. :)

Does anyone have problems firing long colts out of this gun? I'm thinking about buying this gun as I have a lot of loaded .45 acp. I also reload and somehow have acquired quite a few .45 Colt. I'd probably plink with the acp's and use the longs for defensive carry.

.45 Colts worked well, from standard to Buffalo Bore.
The only accuracy issues I found were with several ACP loads.
