Mosin-Nagant as a first rifle?

CON: If you're not a hand loader there is not much as regards hunting ammo selection in 7.62 x 54.

Brown Bear has a 203gr soft point. They are the only one I know of, but it's available. Granted, not a huge selection (which may have been your point).

A spam of mosin ammo will make him a great shooter in due time. More trigger time is better . They get used to the recoil. ANd more fun too.

make sure to tighten all screws on the front and rear of the magazine . Bring a flat scrwdriver at the range for they tend to loosen up after a while. Good luck

Its like a modernized version of the musket of its day, the year 1891. Whats not to like a piece of history that came from Mother Russia. Its like Russian vodka, clear and simple but it kicks your senses well.

My first rifle was a Mosin M44. My third rifle was a M91/30.

to OP: I hope you're getting him a spam can of ammo too. After all, a new toy needs "batteries".

If you have not ordered it yet, Classic Firearms has some really nice round receiver rifles in right now. We have ordered several, not hand select, and they have all been very nice for surplus rifles. The hex receiver ones they currently have been ok, but not as nice as the round.

If you pay the $10 for hand select, ask for a unit made before WW2, the machining finish is much nicer. Onc the war effort ramped up, they left rougher finishes on barrels and such to speed production.

I've found that most teens get a big kick out of shooting the M-N. It's loud and fun and makes you feel like a Bolshevik for a couple minutes......

Don't worry about the recoil if he is as big as you say. I was shooting 12 gauge buckshot with my dad when i was in elementary school. Not like bruises kill unless you have a rare blood disease. I would say that's a good choice I've always wanted one but opted to buy more expensive rifles instead. You should check out JGsales they have lots of surplus rifles. ( www.JGsales.com ) they are located in Prescott, AZ they also have pretty fair prices ( I think ) Another good reason a Mosin is good is because they can be had for as little as 80 bucks and it's a big fun full power boom stick. Happy Holidays

Timney makes a trigger especially for the Mosin.

I installed it & it is nice & crisp........a great improvement over the factory trigger.

All I'm gonna say is there were a lot of teenage Russians whose first and only rifle was a Mosin.
They seemed to do well enough with them to drive the Hun all the way back to Germany,,,;)
