I was having a conversation at the range today with a couple other guys about milsurp collecting and one guy said he was thinking about getting his first Mosin Nagant as a Finnish M39. And I tried to convince him that while the M39 is probably the best Mosin as a shooter it's not really representative and he should first get a 91/30 because not only it's the definitive form and function for the make and model, but it's the most esthetically pleasing - prettiest, nicest lines --- sexiest, if you will, for our polling purposes. So - poll questions - seeing as I have decent examples of both and can take a pic of both together, what's your opinion, of the two of my Mosin Nagant rifles pictured, which one is the prettiest and the sexiest? The Russian 91/30 (top) or the Finnish M39 (below)?

M39. While a 91 or a 91/30 is more representative of the line. The M39 is top of the food chain. If a Nagant could be sexy, the M39 would be Marilyn Monroe. The M91/30 is; well let’s just not say.

Maybe I should have said, "esthetics" instead of "sexiest" seeing as how my OP was probably somewhat male-viewpoint oriented. OK, sexist, if you want to use that label, I'm fine with that. I doubt if there's a male out there that isn't sexist by his very nature. And we do have a male-dominated audience here at THR. Regarding the rifles, I think the 91/30 has the better esthetics. The nicer lines. The M39 seems to me to be, well, "chunky".

I only have a 91/30 and hadn't actually noticed that there was as much difference, aesthetically, between the M39 and the 91 as the above photos reveal. I think there were a few straight-stocked M39s, but most were like the one above. I'd always thought the M44 was a better looking gun than the others....

Well, I think it's like Ginger or Mary Anne. I'd pick Mary Anne, and the 91/30, although I'd gladly trade a couple of my 91/30's for a '39. Once a guy wanted to trade me a M39 for my FR8, and like a fool I declined.

I’ve never agreed with getting a more basic but still similar rifle before you get the one you actually want.

There is nothing run of the mill about any of the firearms I own and I hope never to get any.

A 91/30 is so vanilla I find my eyelids getting heavy. A Finnish M39 makes my eyes open and my eyebrows raise.

As far as sexy goes for either of them, Hacksaw Jim Duggan carried a stick about as sexy as any Mosin.

At one time I owned 10 Mosin 91s and thought they were great until I found a M 39. Wow what a difference. Everything fit better and it was more accurate. Definitely the sexiest of the models. I ended up buying 3 before I stopped buying rifles.

Sadly, today I have none having to sell all my guns because I was going into assisted living and they don't allow guns. Fortunately I gave a few to my son so I can still enjoy them.

Prettiest and sexist? You have to be kidding. No old battle (or new for that matter) rifle is in that catagory. They are just clunky and drab.
I couldn't disagree with you more. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so personally and absolutely subjective. Upon beholding any and all of my old battle rifles, they are all attractive and appealing in each of their own special and unique ways. And especially so if I know their "story". Even this scarred old relic, my Royal Tiger Ethiopian Carcano "find", which keyholes each and every shot, and was found decorated by its last user with thumbtacks arranged in a design on the stock (since removed, and I wish I knew that story!!), has a place of honor hanging up on the wall above my office desk:

Except that's not the reason I gave the advice. I has more to do with learning the history and development of the Mosin Nagants. Sure, if you're just getting the rifle to shoot, then get the best of the breed. And only the best of the breed. But if your interest lies in learning the breed, then start with its beginning. And get one of each along its path to glory ....

I don't know why anyone would buy a milsurp these days at the prices they command just to have a rifle to shoot. There are better modern rifles that shoot better for those kinds of prices. The only reason to buy a milsurp these days is for its inherent historical and collectible value. And at least half of that is knowledge, not performance.

Well, and there is a substantial price difference between a 91/30 and a M39. If one is in the market for one or the other, that plays a big part in the decision, unless of course one is Mr.Moneybags. There is a performance difference between the MN and the M39, but it's not so great that in testing individual rifles, you wouldn't find a MN out shooting a M39. Some 91/30's are very accurate. One can't say ALL M39's are more accurate than ALL 91/30's.

But I still think Mary Anne is more sexy than Ginger.
