Anyone know what slip on butt pad would work on a Mosin Nagant 91/30? I'm sure the steel butt plate was good on Nazi heads but the dead blood line on my shoulder tells me its time to get a little cushion going. Thanks, X

A search engine is your friend. There's one out there that's the same contour and screws into the stock as normal and only runs about $15.

But seriously, the darn thing doesn't kick that badly to warrant an investment. Just wear two shirts.

xstuntman,
The recoil is bearable, but if you want to spend some time at the range than you soon start flinching . Once I forgot the slip on pad and shot 60 rounds without it, just having a towel over my shoulder on top of a T-shirt. The bruise didn't go away for a week. Keep in mind that if you shooting while sitting ,you take more pounding than if you were standing. Sure, some macho guys say : take it like a man, but no one has seen those guys do so.
MN was shot by soldiers wearing thick uniform and a coat (only 11 cold months in Russia, the whole rest is Summer) therefore they could take the pounding .

Agreed, I'd save my money. I'm a skinny 135 Ib guy, and I usually shoot with a light shirt or maybe a jacket when its cold, the recoil isn't that bad.

I've got one of the replacement pads on mine, bought through combathunting.com. I didn't really mind the recoil, but the Mosin was designed to be used with several layers of Russian winter clothing. As such, the shortness of the stock put my wrist at a really uncomfortable angle. The extra 1" or so that the pad adds really smooths things up. The softened felt recoil was a nice side-effect.

I say go for it. Even though my 91/30 didn't cause me pain when shooting it offhand (hurts a bit from the bench), I've noticed that I can shoot it more accurately with a Limbsaver on there.

The extra LOP makes the sights more effective (less daylight between post and notch) and even though it's not much, I do anticipate the recoil less than I did before, making my shots more accurate.

THER PERFECT ONE; Butler Creek, slip on pad, size small. you may have to powder it a little, or roll the rubber down like a sock first, then roll up on the stock. but once it is on, it is perfect; no gaps, no movement at all, totally snug. all for about 8 bucks.

I really think this is funny since I'm all of 135lbs soaking wet.

I typically shoot in a t-shirt and a single layer denim jacket; neither of which has much recoil absorbing capability and typically fire 100 rounds per session. The only time a Mosin bothers me with recoil is when the butt plate screw on mine backs out (the hole in the stock stock is stripped).

THAT will get your attention! :(

Something else i've noticed is most people I hear say the mosin with a steel butt doesn't bother them are built like me; fairly short and thin- 5'7", 135lbs or so. I imagine this has to do with the LOP on a mosin only being about 1/2" too short for your typical someone that is 5-5 to 5-7. The rifle fits me well, so recoil is there but not an issue.

I am also looking for a pad that can be slipped onto either of my Mosins when I'm ready to shoot it, and leave it off otherwise. The recoil on the short M38 is a bear. I just got the 91/30 and haven't shot it yet.

I think a M44 is in order, don't you?

The recoil really isn't all that bad (5'8" 185lbs.) but I'll admit I find myself rubbing my shoulder after about 50 rds. Somewhat worse than my M1903. Somewhat better than my K98k.

I started trap shooting with a 12ga at age 12. The bruise I get from my rifles can never compare with those I get from three or four rounds of trap.

I use the limbsaver Small size and it fits perfect. Plus it will easily swap between my 91 and M44 depending on which i want to use.
