Yes, I've joined the Mosin Nagant crowd. I had to satisfy my need for heavy steel and a hard hitter with some history. Can't play with AR's all the time. Anyway...

Looking to put a reddot on an M44. Don't want to drill or mangle the rifle. Did a lot of research. Comes down to two mounts.

1] SK
2] Darrell

Which should I get? I need a mount that can accept an Aimpoint 30mm ring. Something sturdy that won't shift around. I hear good things about both, but more good things about the Darrell. Is there much of a difference between the two?

I promise to post pictures here when I get it mounted. :)

I have an S&K on my M44, great mount so far. S&K shipped the mount promptly and had very friendly customer service.

Edit: S&K mounts require the use of S&K rings that are specific to the mount. You can call S&K to see if they offer a 30mm ring... but I doubt it. Go with Darrels mount since it uses a weaver base if I remember correctly. Its ugly as sin in my opinion and that's what made the difference in my choice but I installed a Leupold Scout Scope and I guess you're putting on a red dot sight.

I was under the impression that SK makes a weaver top model also?

If they don't I'm going with the Darrell. I don't want to deal with other rings, I have the rings I plan to use already.

:D

I kind of figured. I'm going to transplant my Aimpoint from my AR-15 over to the M44 temporarily while I play with this new toy. Hopefully, the Aimpoint can survive the M44's recoil. It better for the $$$ it cost! I know, the optic costs 3x what the rifle did. I just hate reddots that washout in bright sunlight, have 3hr batteries or break.

We'll see.....

I didn't realized the weaver style base was available from S&K... I would have bought that instead of the S&K style rings base. Oh well.

I use the darrel's mount on my M39 finn mosin with a weaver scope and it works wonderfully.

I have Darrell mounts....

on two of my Mosin Nagant rifles. Good mounts. He has updated his mounts as feedback comes in.....chris3

I'll go with the Darrell. I thought the SK was comparible in quality??? Well anyway, that's what I wanted to know!!

Thanks guys. I'll post pictures when the project is done. Right now I am dealing with the removal of cosmoline. This is worse than cleaning an AR-15. Thankfully, it is a one-time deal. By the time the mount gets here, it should be clean LOL.

Also looking at which ammo to order for the first range trip out. I'll be getting 300 or 600 rounds of the spam can stuff soon, but for the next range trip I'll probably just pick up some Wolf or that 7N1 stuff to sight in with an get an estimate of what the rifle can do.

iv heard much disapointment about the 7n1 stuff. its a light ball and was originaly intended for use in the SVD. most mosins prefer heavy ball. im not saying it wont be good ammo. its well made and much more consistant than most surplus ( consistancy= accuracy) but dont blow a wad of money to get "sniper ammo" and expect your MN to become a tack driver

Oh no ...I don't expect even handloading to make it a tack driver. I just don't want to handload for 54R as I'm quite involved in other cartridges at the moment, so I am figuring to get whatever has a decent level of consistency. Nor do I want to buy anything match grade that costs an arm and a leg. That would defeat the purpose. I just want something that is likely to be better than the surplus ammo. That's all.

I'll pass it up and get Wolf. Most searches I've done say it's pretty decent in 54R.

Thanks for the input.

I've succeeded in getting out 98% of the cosmoline from all the metal parts except for the bore. Some tiny spaces I didn't spend a lot of time on. Bore is going to get heavy-duty treatment of Tipton's soon. Leaving that for last. I got most of it off of the exterior of the stock too - so that I can handle it without getting my hands filthy. But it's going to need something more. Either mineral spirits or heat. The cosmo smell is 80-90% gone. I heard some people like it ....:p

I am also planning to put a scout scope on an M-44. I can't afford an Aimpoint for the project (plus, it's only a $90 rifle), so what other brands and types would be suitable?

David's Collectibles has a good selection of Mosin Nagant accessories. I've customized my M44. ATI Stock, Scout Mount and 2-7x32mm Long Eye Releif Scope, Muzzle Break and I reload for it using S&B brass. The mount and scope hold zero just fine. The rifle can put 10rnds into the palm of your hand at 100yrds.

David's Collectibles Scout Scope Mount

jpwilly - thank you for posting your Mosin pic!

I have an in-depth question on David's Collectibles scout scope mount for M44: how does it compare with Darrell's and S&K stuff? It seems similar but is 1/3 the price, and even with their specialized rings (@12.99 each), it's still a bargain - so I am tempted, but I just can't find installations instructions/comments/close up pics on-line.

Also, I have noticed a bunch of comments on avoiding flimsy scopes for Mosins - so which scout scopes are rugged enough?

Many Thanks!

most mosins prefer heavy ball.

"The 7.62x54R originally had a 210-grain round-nosed full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet. Due to experiences in the Russo-Japanese War, it was replaced in 1908 with a 148-grain spitzer FMJ bullet, which has remained standard to the present."

ALL of mine prefer the lightball (with one exception - the Yugo NNY brass case heavy ball does very well). YMMV.

I would be a little hesitant to put a nice red-dot on a Mosin. The recoil is punishing and it could be hard to keep a zero. P.S jpwilly how much did that muzzle break run you? and How was it installed?

Mosin scope

I can tell you first hand that what ever you put on that short barrel mule you will have to tighten it up. The recoil is punishing. The recoil loosened mine, and I finally had to put some loc-tite thread locker on the screws to keep it from loosening. Use the blue, not the red loc-tite.
God speed and good luck!

I have a 91/30 that already had a regular drill and tap scope mount on it. Whoever had id done did a real nice job, and I paid the price for a regular 91/30 for it. Given the recoil of the rifle, I wonder about the durability of any aftermarket scope mounts. I have already had to go back and retighten all the screws, as it was already loose when I got it. The best mount may be the original sniper version, as the others seem quite fragile. I also have an M-44 that I kind of converted to a scout rifle. I say "kind of" because all I did was float the barrel and tighten the action. The barrel appeared new, the crown was untouched, and the stock trigger is superb. I left the stock appearance and also left the bayonet on. I don't intend to mount a scope, I'm leaning more towards a mojo or similiar sight. Accuracy is excellent with the Czech light ball, I haven't even tried 7N1, which I save for my ROMAK. My SVT doesn't like any of the light ball either, so I am going to but a gas adjustment tool. So what I am saying is just take care with any aftermarket mount on a Moison Nagant. I found out the hard way that even an M1-A scope mount is easily knocked out of whack. Check the mount screws frequently as well.

Rob4570 the recoil pad is fine for your shoulder but does nothing at all to protect the scope or its mount etc... And Since my 13 year old niece shoots a T-53 (m-44) every week 60-80 rnds of Czech LB without any recoil pad I'm not bout to put one on onea mine :D

The recoil has never bothered me at all but it sure tears up optics...... I was gonna start a thread last week discussing just what guns folks considered heavy recoil for them after watching my Niece and step daughter shooting the step daughter is 20 but built like a 12 year old and only 75lbs was using an M-38 the niece her T-53 and neither seemed to be effected by recoil for almost a hundred rnds but the other daughters husband was really hurting after 40 rnds of lightball he's 5'6" at 200 lbs myself I'll go through 100 rnds maybe 150 and no problems at 6'2" 184 lbs but I've been a steel worker, truck driver (hauling drop deck loads so always swingin chains etc..) Maybe I'll put that thread together this week it could be intresting....
