At present, I have a Mosin Nagant project on-going in my workshop. I have removed the barrel from the stock. I have removed a much cosmoline as I able to. I have sanded the stock with some 220 and 320 sandpaper and have used some fine steel wool to prepare the stock surface for either to stain or not to stain. My preference is to keep the wood the color that is exposed at the present. I have some boiled linseed oil, would this be acceptable to apply to the stock, thereby keeping the stock color as natural as possible.

As to the barrel, would using some CLP Breakfree on the barrel help in bringing as much bluing of the barrel back.

Thanks for your suggestions

BLO will work. I typically use a 1/3 mix of BLO, turpentine, and vinegar. You can also try 50/ 50 BLO and pure tung oil (not a tung oil "finish"). If you do decide to use a colored stain I would order one of the alcohol-based stains that Brownells (and probably others) carry. Once dry, either of the above can be used the same way to protect the wood.

Also, for removing any non-hardening (and even some of those) finishes Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher works great and is good for the wood to boot.

Regarding the blue, I take the barreled action and soak it down with Brake Kleen until it's....clean. Even the crustiest Cosmoline yields pretty easy. Next step is coating the exterior with non-detergent 30W motor oil and letting sit overnight.
