Hello All,
And happy easter(sorry, im not exactly politicaly correct), I think the next rifle i am gonna purchase will be a Mosin Nagant. Does anyone here know the best price i can find on one, im not looking for anything special just a cheap one i can have to mess around with, i figured it would be good to add to the collection. Thanks Guys

aimsurplus.com if you have an FFL dealer you can pay to transfer it to you. i mean, online the prices only vary by like 5-10 bucks.

however. the FFL transfer fee may be enough to make it cheaper to buy one at cabelas or basspro or big 5. again however, ive found these rifles are not always the greatest cosmetically and these stores dont always have a large selection to choose from.

my best mosin was ordered from classic arms and i payed $10 for them to hand pick the best rifle out of a group of 5. i wanted the shiniest barrel and bore and im not disappointed.

TDLR: you need to do some research. find out what an FFL transfer fee would be for you and then find the rifle you want. the absolute dirt cheapest might not really be what you want. you could probably benefit by spending an extra $20. just my 2 cents

I recently got a 91/30 from AIM and paid the hand-pick $10, and it was worth it... I got a beautiful rifle with a mint bore.

Picked mine up from local dealers and Big 5. Very happy with them all!

You can put a scout mount on in place of the rear sight and use a long eye relief scope. That's the easy way to mount a scope on one.

They also make extensions you can put on the mount that will allow you to mount a scope back over the receiver. I don't know how stable that long of a mount is.

roger that, any suggestions on a cheap long eye relief scope? were talkin like a 3x9 power hopefully, or, well, i dont know what the criteria is on a long eye releif scope. I really want to keep this set up very very cheap

BSA, NCStar and Tasco are some of the cheap brands. Be aware that these scopes might not hold up to the recoil of a 7.62x54R and many of them do not track well. If I were going to try to buy a really cheap scope like your plan, I'd get one from Wal-Mart and try to put at least 100 rds through it within a few weeks, so you could return it if it fails. If you plan to shoot it a lot, I'd make sure to get 200 rds in.

The only caveat is to buy a quality mount like an S&K. I bought a a cheap m/n mount and it rattled loose in less than 100 rounds. My three S&K mounts (98K, M/N and Enfield) have been rock solid for years and thousands of rounds. Here is a link for where I got my M/N 91/30 mount http://kinneysshootingsupply.com/mounts-sk9170-mosinnagant-9130-9159-scout-mount-p-671.html

^^^ This is true. You may spend as more on a mount and rings than the rifle itself.

Hi Gents,

If you remove the rear sight from a 91/30, you will see a dovetail that is approximately 3/8". You can mount a 'scope to that, or buy an adapter to change the 3/8" to Weaver (I recommend this).

Scoping a M/N or any military rifle tends to be expensive. I went with the cheap aluminum mount and NcStar 2-7x32 LER initially...the mount lasted 100 rounds and the scope made it through a whole 440 round tin of 7.62x54 ammunition before zero started to wander. Now all my scoped mil surplus rifles sport S&K mounts, Bushnell Trophy XLT 2-6x32 scopes and low steel weaver rings. That type of setup will run you ~$250...but my motto is now "buy once, cry once".

I have a couple Mosin 91/30's NIB I never got around to messing with... If anyone wants one feel free to PM me for a price.

I've heard the ATI scope kit is a decently easy install if you have a drill press. I've seen it as cheap as $45, too!

I used to pick them up from Gunshows for under $100 bucks, sometime as low as $70. You get to see exactly what your getting, get to take it home that day, and can get ammo there too. Lately, it seems as tho a lot of the them have been rising in prices for some reason.
They are my favorite long rifle, extremely accurate out of the box and VERY powerful.

+1 platestacker

many a day has my brother been upset with me while he is shoot coke cans wirh his 7mm at 150+ only to watch his can expload and see me standing next to him firing off hand with standerd sights

Darrell makes a very nice scout mount for a Mosin Nagant and Schmidt Rubin K31. I have has a couple on my Mosin Nagants for several years now. Mine are the first model and I believe he is on his third model now. They are around 85 bucks. Once you get them set, they are rock solid......chris3

I used to shoot HUGE trees in the mountains of Montana. Trees so large I coulden't fit my arms around them. Nothing, including 5.56 and 7.62x39 could penetrate those trees like a Mosin Nagant could. Clean thru, both sides. Insane!

If your interested in a cheap scoped rifle then just sporterize it. Not a popular answer but 91/30's are a dime a dozen and it will allow you to use regular rifle scopes.

It will involve drilling but any monkey with patience should be able to pull it off.

Some would say that putting a scope onto a Mosin is like putting a riding saddle onto a cow. With SOOOOO many other rifles out there that will easily accept scopes it seems like a lot of extra effort to put one onto a Mosin. Instead why not just enjoy it for what it is? A piece of military history that you can shoot and through it relive a little bit of what it was like during those hard times. Take it as a challenge to see how well you can learn to do with the poor military style iron sights. Or at most perhaps swap the rear sight for a ghost ring if the ol' eyes aren't up to snuff.

At least that's what I'm doing with mine.

For cheap the wartime Mosins can't be beat. But the machining on them is rough. And the one I just bought is not chambered all that well so it's bulging all the case shoulders and cracking about a third of them with the surplus ammo I've got. Based on what I heard of possible safety issues in bolt rifles from this sort of issue I'm going to try taking the one I've got back for an exchange.

I see that there's another outlet locally that has prewar late 20's to 30's vintage Mosins with the hex receiver. I'm thinking of getting one of those and selling the '43 or it's replacement in favour of somewhat nicer exterior machine work. Or given how cheap they are possibly just keep both as constrasting examples.

I have yet to sporterize a mosin but the easy answer is because they are $70.

I was a devout iron sight guy until I hit my 40's and then those targets at 100, 200 and 300 yards looked REALLY REALLY blurry. Now all but three of my rifles have scopes on them...and the ones that don't, sport peep sights.
