I just bought a rearsenaled ishevsk 1942 round bolt mosin nagant m91/30 to stand in for my nicer rifles as a hunting/tinkering gun while I'm at school, and I'm trying to work out a scope. I've already built and installed a bent bolt, and I want to stay away from the scout scopes and mounts.

I should be clear in stating that I am a tinkerer, I like to do my own work when at all possible. I'm also in college, which puts me on a pretty tight budget.

One idea that really appeals to me is the way this guy did it with the weaver #1 scope mount and base:

However, since I'm at school I don't have my drill press set up with me and have access to, at best, a small drill press rig, and a hand drill in the room. Which means the screws on the front are going to have to be scrapped. I do have an oxy-mapp gas welder/brazer that I used to make the bent bolt with which I could easily braze the plate to the receiver, but I'm concerned about hurting the heat treat on the receiver (I'm assuming there is one).

Next up is the repro PU scopes/mounts. This would be the easiest option because it's just a matter of drilling straight through and tapping. I've been looking at the ones on ebay that are running in the 150-250 range for the combo, and though that's in my price range per se, the low price point is kind of putting me off. Will these combinations be able to hold any kind of a zero on a nagant?

I can do the scout setup for the price of a pistol scope and some weaver rings, but I want it to have at least the same general appearance as something period on the cheap. Help me out if you can guys!

I put a reproduction PE scope mount that uses 1 inch rings on mine. I got it from here www.accumounts.com The scope is a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 with BDC that I bought from Amazon. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to take the rifle to the range yet, so I can't comment on how it preforms. Hopefully this weekend I can get it to the range, I've had the rifle for a week now and I've been dying to shoot it.

The gunsmith who put it together for me said the mount was solid. He did have to adjust the mount to get it to fit tighter onto the rifle though.

Doing this to a Mosin-Nagant is pretty much a giant experiment.

Here are some photos of my 91/30

Do yourself a favor and put on a no gunsmithing mount! This way you keep the value and authenticity of the firearm!

mookiie, I'm not worried about that. There are still plenty of mosins to go around, and the interwar izhevsk round receiver is literally the least rare of all of them. I'm not big on selling things, either. Further, there's not a no-gunsmithing option that isn't in the scout configuration, which is exactly what I don't want on my rifle.
There are guns that I look for as far as history and retaining value, mosin's aren't there yet.

SMW421: Let me know how it performs! That's a nice looking setup.

Alright, I'll let you know how it shoots. I'm just waiting for some 7.62x54 ammo I ordered a couple days ago to arrive.(Hopefully by this weekend but I don't know) I have a ton of surplus steel core, but I wanted to try some modern production commercial ammo in it because it supposedly has better accuracy than surplus. I'm going to try some Brown Bear 174 grain fmjs.

Its good that you have the skill to bend the bolt yourself. I have no tool skills, and gunsmith work cost alot of money. If you have those skills you could try bedding the rifle yourself too, which supposedly helps increase accuracy. You may be able to do put it all together cheaply if you do the work yourself.

I know you said you don't want to use a scout type mount, but thought you would still like to see these and you might change your mind. The eye relief is actually ok. I still get a decent weld and its comfortable to shoot.

I really like that setup, but I've heard some shaky things about the rear site mounts. Is that one pretty stable?
And that's interesting work on the bolt. Fits the sporter profile pretty well.

Smw421, I do intend to bed the action. It'll be my first bedding job, so I'm going to brush up on the technique before I do it, and I'm not sure I want to hollow out or shim the handguards for a free-float (a la the finnish nagants), or just cork the barrel like the boxotruth suggests. I guess that depends on what I finally decide I want this rifle to be able to do and what kind of promise it shows at the range in its current state. I'm taking it out today.
