wallyworld has the .30-06 of the ATR for 250+tax, but are sold out and cannot order the .308, (warehouse out of stock.) otherwise .308 at walmart would be 280

my local gun shop can get me the .308 for 300+tax.

Im mainly going to be doing target shooting, and i dont know what caliber i should get.

is the .308 worth 50 more over the .30-06?

Well.... physics tells us that the accuracy potential of the 308 is better than a 30.06, but you would proly only see it on a computer graph, of a electronic layout. tough to say which ammo is cheaper right now, or even more available.
I would wait for the 308 though.

what about longevity, do you see .30-06 being phased out in the future?

I am looking at getting this same rifle in .308. There isn't much around here that I can't do with that caliber. I can sure as heck deer hunt and hog hunt with it and i may even take a trip to eastern colorado to try a bit of pronghorn someday. I think the 308 can do all of that and more. Not that a lot of other caliber's can't. I just think the .308 is a good all around cartridge.

I have the .30-06.

When I bought mine, Mossberg only offered them in .30-06 or .270Win (or perhaps that was all I could find..not sure).

If you're gonna work up handloads for it, then get .30-06. If you're gonna run factory AND want suberb accuracy, pay more for the .308.
