I recently purchased a used 590 and with 2 3/4 00 buck it only holds 7 in the tube. I always thought that the 590's held 8+1. Or was this only on a few?
1. Is an extended mag follower installed? These can often be as long as a shell, and can take up some of your mag capacity. For example, the Wilson Combat extended mag follower looks like this:
2. Check that your magazine spring isn't twisted or kinked. If it is, this can prevent loading the magazine to full capacity. If the spring is old, or has taken a "set", this can also be a problem - replacing the spring every few years is a good idea.
Don't take this the wrong way, but also make sure it's actually a 590. Mossberg makes another 20" shotgun, the model 500A, with a full length magazine tube that only holds 7+1.
Check the length of the unfired shells too. 2 3/4" refers to the fired length of the shell. Unfired shell can vary in length up to 1/4". The longest shells I've used is the S&B 00 buck load, they use a rolled crimp and get 12 in a load. The shortest is the Federal 00 buck reduced recoil load at 8 loaded. This might be your answer too.
Thanks for the replies. The mag follower is the stock steel unit. The barrel says Mossberg 590 20". And it has the mossberg ghost ring sights so to the best of my knowledge it looks like a stock 590.
3Gun, the 00 buck I am running is indeed S&B so that may very well be the problem. Thanks for the suggestions.
