I'm looking to get a new shotgun. Currently my "go to" home defense weapon is a Remington 870 Express 12 gauge. The 28 inch barrel however makes it a little hard to wield indoors.

The Mossberg 590 looks like a nice shotgun. I've read up on it and most owners say they love it. My question, what is the price range?

Whatever the cost it is probably more than just getting a new 18" barrel to put on that greatest-pump-shotgun-ever-made of yours. :)

Yeah, I got my 590 just before I deployed over in J-ville, NC for I think $360 or so. This is my second Mossberg and I love the things. The only problem you may have with them is the plastic safety button that tends to break but that's a $10 fix. I think the nicest features about the Mossberg is the ambidextrious safety, a slide release that doesn't require you to break your firing grip and a carrier that rides against the bolt when the pump is foreward. I had a shell just the shell catch in my 870 once with the bolt forward and it took disassembling the gun to get the shell off the lifter. The new models have a flex tab that solves that problem but the problem of the lifter snagging your thumb on occasion (hasn't happened to me personally but I've heard others mention it before) still remians.

Wow, thanks. I didn't know about that. Do they sell a version of the 590 with a metal safety to civilians?

The 590 models have the plastic safety and trigger guard. The 590A1 has the metal safety, metal trigger guard, and heavier barrel. Anyone can buy the 590A1 models but most stores don't stock them because they are more expensive. Mossberg just introduced a bunch of new 590A1 configurations.

I'm a canadian and I have a 590A1 :what: they are not on the restricted or prohibited list...yet.

How much more expensive? I'd be willing to pay $50 more knowing my safety isn't going to break off on me.

Ever since the election I've seen the 590A1s going for close to $500.

You can buy a replacement metal safety for any model Mossberg for about $10. The plastic trigger guard is no big deal to me, all the new Remingtons have them and you don't see many complaints.

I don't think the plastic trigger guard and safety are the only two differences, but I'm too lazy to go look it up.

The other differences are a heavier 18.5" barrel and standard ghost ring (3 dot?) sights. It looks like now there are quite a few models of 590A1 but this was the only one as of about 6 months ago.
