I recently acquired a Mossberg 590. It is relatively easy to switch the safety off, but very difficult to switch it back on. Has anyone encountered that problem before or have a possible solution? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

A drop or three of oil under it?

Probably the ball detent & spring are dry, or the safety button itself where the ball clicks in & out of the detents.

Is it new? Work the safety about 1000 times and it'll get better. Or take it apart and clean/oil it as rcmodel wisely suggests.

My 590A1 is not much used and the safety is positive but not difficult -- it is smooth and comfortable. Though steel it is better than a 590 plastic one I had and 500's I've owned.

I have a 590 and the safety is pretty stiff both ways. Sometimes I leave little dents in the skin of my thumb trying to get it off. I've worked it a lot over time and it might be a little easier but it might be my thumb just going numb.

Other than that it is a great shooter and I would never part with it.

Had the same issue with mine. Put on some gloves, work it back and forth a couple hundred times. It's still stiff, but totally usuable. It just needs some breaking in.

I didn't find that oil helped.

Many thanks for the helpful replies. The gun is not new, but does not look like it has had too many rounds through it. I oiled it this evening and worked it until my thumbs went numb. Hopefully it will loosen over time.

You will sometimes run across one of these where the system has too much play in it. This allows the safety button to rise up enough to cause binding when the detent ball wedges between the receiver and the button .

The fix for this is to remove enough metal from the safety arm where it goes through the receiver to tighten the system up. Most likely if you remove your safety button the detent ball will pop out, so be careful - they are normaly staked down , but the play I mentioned also allows for the detent ball to push upwards high enough to take out the staking .
