Can anyone tell me if the threads on the mag tube caps for the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 590 are the same or different?

Thanks

If anyone is looking for a Ext tube to fit the 18.5" 590, the Choate tube that fits the Mossberg 930 SPX will fit it but it will be to long. You can modify it very easily. Cut it about 1/8" longer than you want it and fold it inwards just like it was done at the factory by Choate to prevent the plastic stopper from coming out of the end. Put a metal pipe or rod very close to the ID of the ext tube up through the tube for support about 1/8" from the top and tap and round the end of the ext tube inwards just slightly. If the steel is to tough and doesn't bend easy here is a quick Tutorial on metal work if you don't already know.

Heat steel to dull red and let air cool to anneal (soften) for shaping

Heat steel to dull red and quench it in motor oil to harden it. It's now tempered but it will be brittle.

Now just reheat the same area until the oil on the surface flashes into flame and remove it from the heat source. You have now tempered it so it will be hard but not brittle.

Paint it with Dupli-Color 1200 degree ceramic paint (Part # DH 1602 High Heat Black) from your auto parts store, about $6. Bake it in the oven and you are done. The finish is very durable and will match the finish on your 590. I put a thread on the ceramic paint in the THR section "Gunsmithing and Repairs". It is excellent for refinishing firearms.

Vangcomp has a one-shot extension for the Mossberg "clean-out tube models", btw.

That is a one shot extension for $75. What I am talking about is you can make a two shot extension yourself in about an hour for about half that. That will give you 7+1 capacity on a 18.5" Mossberg. The extension will have to be 3.5" to 4" and go to the end of the muzzle to do that.
