Mossberg 930 SPX question

Just picked up a Mossberg 930 SPX from Dicks for $560. Im excited about this shotgun but it is my first autoloading shotty. My problem/question has to do with the manual of arms for it. I have it loaded all up with 7+1 and if I pull the bolt back it will eject the chambered round but wont pull one from the tube. I have to hit the bolt release to send it home and then again to release a round into the tray and then pull the bolt back to load the next round. This happens for the first 3 rounds or so and then it starts doing how I'd expect where it ejects a round and draws one from the tube. I have not fired it yet but right now im not 100% confident that I'm going to get more than one shot off.

You are worry before you have tried it out. Clean the inside well and lightly lube it, not the gas system.

Use some heavy loads to break it in.

Take it apart, get to know it, clean it, lube it, shoot it.

Mossberg's seem to come from the factory with a little bit of authentic American machine-made factory dirt still inside. Good news, they are Very easy to clean and you probably won't have to pick up the cocking indicator and spring from the floor more than once before you realize that "leave the firearm cocked while disassembling" is good advice. Oh, and while you're picking up the cocking indicator and spring, check your lap to see if the bushing for the rearmost pushpin has fallen out, it's kinda loose. (Don't ask how I know both items, I was only skimming over the owner's manual while doing the get-to-know-your-shotgun thing.)

If you like tight groups, look at some Federal LE132-00 buckshot, it gives me +/-6-inch patterns at 25 yards. If you like the LE132 but don't like that you can only load 6+1 all it takes is a Mossberg 590 magazine spring to restore 7+1 to your 930 SPX.

4thPointofContact, have you seen any feeding problems after replacing the 930 mag spring with the 590 mag spring?

No feeding problems so far. The 590 spring seems to be about the same weight (pressure-wise) as the 930 but it's made from what appears to be just a very slightly thinner wire.

I'll explain a bit further - -
Federal LE132-00, or at least the 10 boxes I have, seems to be just a very tiny fraction of an inch longer than some other 2.75 inch shotgun shells. It's less than the thickness of the rim longer, but once you add that 7 times you get a measurable difference. The 930 seems just bit 'tight' on magazine tube length, add those two factors together and you wind up with about 1/8th on an inch too much LE132 to go into the tube.

I should note that this was not my discovery and I cannot take credit; I learned about this from the ak47.net forum.

FourthPoint, Thanks for the update. I checked Brownells and I can get a 590 mag spring for $7.41. I figure for that little money it's worth the experiment.

I bought one at Dick's and had the same problem/question. I took it out to the range and had no problems. I shot a box of #8, some 2 3/4" 00, and some 3" 00 with no problems or hangups except for a bruise on my shoulder. It seems not to hang up as much and I feel it will be even better with more rounds through it.
