Stoeger Cougar, with money left over for ammo. It's a $400 gun now but when it was a beretta it was a $700 gun. One of the best deals out there.

Taurus 24/7 Pro DS

I recommend the Taurus 24/7 Pro DS. Should be able to pick one up for low $400's. My wife has the 9mm and I have the 45ACP. Her 9 is flawless. It has taked every ammo I have fed it and never even burped.

This one cost $235.00....

It's a Star MOD 30MI. After years of rounds (countless,) it's never jammed on me at all. There's 17+1 capacity with the right Ramline mags, DA/SA with a great DA trigger pull, easy shooting, easy cleaning and easy take down. It's brutally strong, ultra reliable, etc, etc, etc. $350 will get you a perfect one on Gunbroker, less for a visibly used one. These are one of the most neglected and overlooked pistols around.

Note: It's a heavy pistol so it's not the best carry piece. For a range, house or SHTF gun, though, it's a monster.

I never thought I'd say this in the past as I was a detractor until I got one in a trade recently, but in that around $500 range it's really difficult to do better than a Glock 19.

ditto #25. the tightest group of 9mm Para I ever shot was from a buddys CZ.
close to it from my S&W 5906.
I shot a Glock that did near as good, maybe a 19 or 17? can't recollect but I just don't like the 'feel', trigger and recoil they have.

+1 on the recomendation for Tanfoglio pistols or also known as the EAA Witness. While they are not known for their great customer service, I have heard it is getting better. You can get the ''Match'' model for around $525, and it has a bunch of match grade parts and is a real steal!! I have 2 of the Tanfoglio's, a full size 9mm and a compact 40.s&w and they have both been flawless for hundreds of rounds and are every bit as accurate as my 1911's!!:D
Most folks don't know that they make Desert Eagles for IMI too. Tanfoglios are good pistols.

the new Ruger SR9 with glock-like trigger is under 500.00 it feels better then the older ruger handguns, and it will give the other higher priced handguns a run for their money.

I got a Ruger P-95 for the same reasons. But I no longer use it as a carry weapon. For home defense and range practice it's great. It feels more comfortable in my hand than the P-89. As with any good weapon you practice as much as possible for comfort and accuracy.

If you can find a used Sig P220 or a P228 German made for under $500 you would have a real tack driver. If it's new you have to have for under $500 it would be a CZ 75B. I know it's pushing the $500 price a bit, but you can find them for a little over $500.

I have a CZ-75 9mm that can shoot <2.0" with my handloads from a sandbag rest @ 25 yards. Boringly reliable, super comfy, solid. To get under $500.00, you'll have to probably buy used nowdays.

The Tanfoglio/Witness pistols are very good buys as is the Ruger SR9, but only if the trigger on the SR9 has been improved.

I never see true West German Sig under $500.00, and it's hard to find any Sig under $500.00 out-the-door.

In my humble opinion that Glock'll last about as long as any 9mm, save for a CZ, steel Smith & Wesson, or Browning High Power.

To quote a man who spent more than 15 years working as a range safety officer on a public firing line: 'The first pistol to go down on the line will always be a Smith & Wesson; the last will be a Glock.' ;)

Glock Models: 17, 19, or 34; Ruger P Series; or the new FNH 9 are all good choices to make. Last time I checked, CZ pistols had some, 'white metal' parts in them. I've spent the past 6 years doing my best to kill a Glock.

Wasn't a believer when I started out; but, I have to say that as long as you keep (most) Glocks clean they'll just keep on running, and running, and running. Glock's 9mm accuracy is, 'reasonable' at within 3" at 25 yards.

(Of course you realize that the 9mm cartridge is not, 'inherently accurate'. When it comes to 9mm, 'accurate AND reliable' is an oxymoron. The only 9mm pistol this can, honestly, be said about is the SIG P210; and there aren't any of them around for less than $500.00.) :p

My 9mm in order of accuracy:
1) Ruger P89
2) M&P
3) Glock (tie)
4) Ruger SR9 (tie)
5) Kahr M9

Accuracy of the Kahr is such that I would not hesitate to use it in a HD situation. I do prefer higher capacity.

+3 for Tanfoglio EAA Witness Match. Very accurate and joy to shoot. If you read that best 9mm website, it does say that the Match would be at the top of that list (their steel version in on that list as well, but the Match is much better one than the regular steel version for minimal price increase)

I have owned and still do own many different brands of handguns but in my opinion a CZ 75 is hard to beat. I also just purchased a CZ P-01 and it is well over the $500.00 mark but these things have been tested for military more than any other handgun and passed the NATO testing.

No, I like the Glock. I just want another 9. I was thinking CZ 75 before I posted and am getting more and more convinced.

Good choice, I also own a Glock 19 and it is a good gun but I would have to choose my CZ75 and especially my CZp-01 over it.
