I've read some good stuff here, so I'm going to get a little more focused. I have a new M1A Loaded, and I plan to buy a bolt gun, both chambered in .308/7.62.

For faincy shootin' I found www.ammotogo.com sells Federal Gold Medal Match in 200 round lots for $195, however,

When I go to gun-deals.com, ammoseek.com, and www.ammoengine.com, I find the cheapest of ammo is the milsurp. I see milsurp types such as Prvi Partisan, Silver Bear, Brown Bear, Tula, Wolf, Sellier & Bellot, German DAG, German MEN, the list goes on, there are many choices. I understand some are corrosive, and most are berdan primed.

Does anyone have experience with many in this arena? Myyy buddy told me.. famous last words.. that some of that milsurp shoots 5-6 MOA. I'm interested in buying a large quantity but not if that's the case. Can anyone confirm any of them are to be trusted with sub 2 MOA or better? (say under 2 inches at 100 yards, and not bad at 3 or 400 yards).

Thank you. I want to get some inexpensive bulk which is at least worth dirtying up the guns.

Prvi Partizan is good stuff for good price.. Where can I find some? I am looking for more of their M-855 green tip.. Seems every bit as good as the Lake City stuff to me.

Until a few weeks ago, my rifles were on a steady diet of handloads; but a guy at the range gave me a handful of Silver Bear rounds. They shot just fine out of both of my bolt guns, giving me around a 1.5 to 2" group at 100 yards. The only problem that I had was that the bolt was a bit hard to close on some of the rounds, but this was probably due to my tight chambers.

My understanding is that in 7.62, Yugo surplus is supposed to be excellent. Hot and accurate. Unfortunately, it's also corrosive which shouldn't be a problem if you clean your rifle after shooting.

I just ordered a case of 1120 for $219 delivered and hope to test it soon.

In my experience, British Radway Green and German DAG give me the best accuracy. I shot around 1.25 MOA at 100 yards with my Standard M1A with the British stuff. I am more like 2 MOA with the current batch of Portugese I have.

Prvi Partizan is not really surplus ammo, but it is really good stuff none the less. Probably better than any of the surplus. It is reloadable too, unlike most of the NATO stuff.

Here is a 10 shot group (not 3 or 5 like most post)
100yds, off bench, scoped, completely standard M1A
MEN German Surplus
10 rds 1 5/8 inch grpup

Some rifles like some ammo better than others. I wouldnt buy alot of any one ammo until you see if you rifle likes it or not

There is "cheap" ammo and then there is "surplus" ammo. "Cheap" ammo is just that; while "surplus" ammo was owned by a government (generally for a long period of time) and deemed surplus for one of a variety of reasons. Those reasons can include adjectives like defective, corrosive, degraded, outdated, and older-than-your-mom. Generally speaking, ammunition is deemed surplus and sold off when it is deemed to be below the military specification for dependability. In other words, there is a reason it is so cheap.

Of all the brands you've listed, the German stuff is the only military surplus, everything else is just cheap ammo.

Newer Prvi Partizan is foreign commercial ammo, but is Not surplus.
Being foreign does not always mean surplus. Newer Russian-made Wolf etc is also Not surplus.

Prvi is Boxer-primed and I've reloaded numerous .303 cases at least five times.

A friend who retired from the Navy Marks. Team had never shot an Enfield.
Two years ago he practiced a few shots with my Enfield #4/Mk. 1 from 50 yards.

He then sat in the classic position (on the ground) and made the next shot (his first 100 yard shot) into the center of the bullseye.
That's all that I can tell you.

best mil-surp I had was Hirtenberger 7.62.

I bought an untold number of battle packs for 35-40 bucks and LEFT THE BRASS at the range when I first started shooting...almost brings a tear to the eye...leaving that boxer primed stuff there. :(

And it shot very well out of my FAL...gave me 3-4 MOA. Out of my bolt rifle it would give 2-3 MOA. I am sure that others got better, but thats what I was able to get. It did a good job of touching off Tannerite, I know that. :)

Ruag GP-11 nothing comes close to the consistency of that ammo. There is 0.00 inch OAL variation. 0.0012 in neck variation and a powder variation of 0.2 grains which all adds up impressive stats.
This is pure milsurp ammo.

When you start asking questions like that, and show that you're willing to research just a bit, I can say without hesitation that it is time for you to open up your mind and get into handloading.

Price goes down, while accuracy goes up.

Not sure how it will compare to bulk prices, but I'm quite sure you'll like the accuracy. Especially in a bolt gun.

the good old days are sure long gone......remember the battle packs of port/hirt/aust....that was going for 20-30 bucks a pop...picked up several battle packs of the portuguese..to this day I still do not know why..I ordered two cases of the austrailian...which my M1a...absolutely loves...set those aside and ordered a case of the south african for plinking ammo....and its not too bad itself...now tell me this....what is three thousand rounds of 7.62 worth in todays market
