Most Gun Owners Disgust Me!

Well let's have some internecine warfare shall we?
No. We shan't. I don't have the inclination to get into a pissing contest with any of my fellow gun owners. I will tell you this, however, and then I will let go and let you think whatever you want:

I've had numerous gun groups and activists email me, and only ONE said they had any significant grassroots support for any of their legislative activities. Everyone else said they experienced the same frustration.

If you think Republicans aren't a threat to your second amendment rights, you are sadly mistaken. Prime example: Bush administration's stand on the AW ban. Another prime example: GOA ratings. The problem is the vast majority of people in this country say they'll never vote for a third party because it doesn't have chance, but it doesn't have a chance because of views like that. It is a catch 22, and eventually, you either compromise your principles or have the gonads to cast a vote for the person who TRULY represents your views and values. Oh, Whoopee! Gun owners voted Republican. THAT is a big part of the problem!

Bringing up the demise of COA and UTGOA was meant as an example. They cited apathy as the main cause for their shutting down, and I have no reason not to take them at their word. There were undoubtedly other reasons for their collapse. But having experienced difficulty in getting people motivated, I would say you get tired of banging your head against the wall.

Regarding Silveira: You are entitled to your opinions. You gave me a reason for not supporting the case. I gave you a rebuttal for that reason, which I doubt you even glanced at. But that's OK. If we don't win this one, at least we will have tried our damnest. If we do, win it, this will be a major victory for the Second Amendment. At least we will have taken action, instead of talking a good game about how we treasure our freedoms, doing nothing to support them and then reaping the rewards of others' efforts on behalf of that freedom.

And finally, I love people who tell me how much they are doing! I think it's great! Unfortunately, you are in the minority - whether or not you are willing to admit it. I'm a gun owner. I know what it's like to be disarmed and helpless and at the mercy of the government, having been born in the USSR. And I will do whatever it takes to protect that freedom. No, I don't want to make this a career, as I would rather work on my novel, which I've had to put aside because I have no time to write it. But I volunteer my time and efforts as much as humanly possible because I believe in what we are doing. I know not everyone is as passionate as I am. But I figure if you claim to treasure your freedoms, you at least should take action in ensuring that they are protected.

Oh, Albert - by the way, I meant to tell you - I think your way is fantastic too! Turn them over to the side of light one by one! he he

There are lots of ways to get involved. I thank all of you who do so. You probably don't hear that enough, but thank you.

And to those satisfied just by riding coattails, yeah, we'll carry you too. :D

Fully 70 to 80 percent of Americans simply don’t know or care about the erosion of their rights.

Isn't that about the same number of Americans who "sat out" during the American Revolution? And they didn't even have TV to distract them.

I agree we all need to support pro-RKBA causes, but I had never heard of these organizations until now. I DID manage to find and join NRA, GOA, CMP, MRRA, MNCCRN and JPFO. Along with www.ahumanright.com, www.flashbunny.com, TFL/THR and other compelling websites that successfully promote our basic rights.

I peruse and belong to plenty of gun, Bill of Rights and 2nd Amendment websites and I've never run across, seen postings promoting or been contacted by COA or UTGOA.

At the most basic level of PR, Citizens of America doesn't have anything "gun-like" in their name, COA is probably easily confused with GOA, and UTGOA doesn't sound like it's for the large percentage of the human population that chooses not to live in Utah.

To use gun-ralated marketing terms, neither COA's shotgun approach nor UTGOA's sniper approach are compelling enough to ever get any kind of mass market. I'll contribute my $10 to a good cause after some research, but I hope they spend it on a Marketing 101 textbook.

I applaud your efforts Tempest, but I really don't feel too badly about not knowing about COA until now. I will feel badly if I don't support their follow-on efforts if they add value to the good fight. Thank you for your awareness-raising efforts.

As far as 3rd parties go -- we had a 3rd party Governor here in Minnesota. Big guy. Maybe you remember him. He ran on Ross Perot's Reform Party, said all the right things, pro-gun, very Libertarian-sounding. He won the election, switched to the Independence Party (not an Independent) and then turned into a Democrat in all but name only.

Also -- Ross Perot gave us the Clintons.:barf:

Show me a path to a Libertarian utopia. Even roll me back to a Jack Kennedy utopia and I'm with you, but I haven't seen it yet.

I think that taking new people out shooting is one of the best things we can all do.

Liberals must dread us more than SARS! When the "Conservative Curtain" sees the demise of those who speak, those who invest sweat and heartache, then we all lose. If there is real heart here, then let those amongst us who posess priceless skills sets and real-world acumen and experience step forward so that, like the Phoenix, new and more powerful an endeavor quickly arises!

For if all that is done is to give polite courtesies to the grave of the fallen, the brave, we are but voles amidst the cemetary of titans.

a little activism

goes a long way...

I emailed Nicki after reading her article. In the amount of time each of us spent reading, or responding to the article here, we could have written a congressional or state representative / senator with instructions on how to vote. This year alone, I sent emails to about 18 committee members, my delegates/senators, and ones that needed reminding. And I did it more than once... I'd say about 1/3 responded to me, of the ones that didn't, probably half voted the way I asked them...

It's simply too easy now to get in touch with your reps in government. 3-6 minutes, a quick letter, name, address phone number, signoff, spell check, click send.

maybe 15 minutes if you're going to spend some time explaining point by point... The bottom line is it does help.
