Most terminally effective 55 grain .223 soft point?

Trust me when I say that you will not have an issue with any 55 grain soft point. The damage they all do is massive. And I mean massive. little hole going in and 8-10 inch hole going out. However I only speak from experience while hunting coyotes and foxes. Rabbits blow up so I can't really say how big of a hole they leave in them. I have yet to hit a rock chuck with one but next spring will provide plenty of chances.
 
The Hornady soft point varmint bullet works very well and is exceedingly accurate. Prairie dogs don't know what hit them, they just explode.
 
You said 55 grain for HD use. I normally don't post a different answer one of the options given by the OP, BUT: In this case, if you are serious about this ammo being designated for that use, you may want to look really hard at federals 62 grain bonded soft point.
 
Two rounds of most anything center of mass counts for more than bullet technology and construction. Buy 55 or 62 grain FMJ for home defense, and put any money you save towards getting some quality instruction on running your rifle.

I disagree. Federal's own testing showed that both the 55 and 62 grain bonded soft points penetrate barriers better than 55 grain FMJ. I think the bonded soft points are a serious over penetration concern in the home.

Perhaps I should just stick with M193...it also seems that soft point's might present a reliability issue (feeding), which I want to minimize with an HD rifle.
 
Best combat 55gr SP? The Federal Tactical Bonded 55gr SP. The 62gr version is even better. Both perform better than any other load out on the market when it comes to shooting through common barriers such as car materials, but they are also very expensive. I keep one 30rd magazine of it for my duty M4, but as much as it costs I don't shoot it much.
 
Ugaarguy, I was thinking of it's penetration characteristics in gel. Wasn't thinking much about the missing the intended target part.

So yeah, very effective if you put it where you should. But it's not inclined to fragment going through walls.
 
Somewhat off topic, but use of softpoint ammo is one of the reasons I only own carbines with M4 feedramps now. Both my previous Bushmasters and an RRA without the ramps had issues with softpoints getting hung up.

As to the original question, Doc Roberts repeatedly recommends
"55 gr Federal bonded JSP load (Tactical--LE223T1 or identical Premium Rifle--P223T2)"
