Mounting A scope On a Savage 24F

Hi all,

I've got a Savage 24F .223 over 12 gauge. The sights are kinda hard for me to see, but I would like to keep it open sighted for shooting clay pigeons with the shotgun barrel. I'm thinking about a removable scope. Has anybody ever done this to this model gun? What's the best brand of mounts, rings, etc, etc to use? Thanks!

I don't know of any good way to do it except to side mount it to the receiver.
Then, it isn't going to be Quick Detachable and return to zero when you take it off and put it back on.

Then it you shoot the 12 ga with the scope on, it is going to try to kick the side-mount off into the weeds.

Somehow scoping a combo gun like that just seems like a bad idea to me, as you are severely limiting the instant dual caliber choice that makes it so good in the first place..

Have you considered leaving it open sights, but changing them to fiber-optic "glow" sights that would be easier to see?

Thanks for your input! I was wongering about the recoil of the 12 gauge....... I was told by one "gunsmith" that fiber optic sights aren't available for that gun. I may just follow some friends suggestions of either neon nail polish or flourescent (sp?) paint & doing it myself.....

Well, it's been a while since I looked at a avage 24, but I think they have a standard 3/8" dovetail front sight.
If so, this will fit it.

Most of the centerfire rifle barrel 24s are factory drilled and tapped. They take a Weaver 74 (Part # 48074) base. They come with a "rib" attached, replace it with the base.

Thanks Guys!. I'm gonna go with see through mounts, so I don't have to keep messing with attaching &detaching the scope......... Any advice &/or reccomendations?

My advice would be to forget see-through rings.

They will put the scope up so high you will not be able to get a cheek-weld on the stock to see through it.

See through mounts are one of those things that seem like a good idea but fail miserably in practice. The scope will be too high for a proper shooting position and the last thing you want if you need to make a quick shot is having to make a decision about which set of sights to use.

Thanks again! I ditched the idea of see through mounts & ordered a Weaver base. I think I'll just mount a scope on it permanently. We have other shotguns for shooting clays.

I have a Savage 24F .30/30 over 12 gauge. I bought a scope base from Brownell's. There are a couple of filler screws on the rib which come out and the base is screwed down on top. Frankly, a scoped 24F is VERY heavy. I didn't much care for the setup and right now the scope is off. I would like to install an aperture rear sight, but the easiest way to do this is to clamp one on the scope base. But I'm sure this would require a much taller front sight.

I tried shooting trap with the scope turned down to 1x and I had a terrible time. I think I was breaking only 4 or 5 out of 25, with or without the scope. Another shooter felt sorry for me and let me borrow an obscenely expensive trap gun. The next round I hit 18 out of 25. That 24F is just a terrible fit for trap. Anyway, my rifle barrel is extremely accurate and I'd like to be able to use a good aperture rear with something like an XS front post with the white line.
