What winding roads we walk, folks.

Through a strange series of events that I won't get into (started six months ago in Qatar), I'll be leaving Michigan this fall. And why not? There are few jobs to be had and all of my friends have left already anyway.

I'll be moving to Tennessee, and will be returning to school part time at the U of T (Knoxville) and working full time to pay for it.

Looking forward to it immensely. I've been to exactly two gun stores in the Knoxville area, and was immensely impressed with what I saw. Good selection.

Nice ranges around, too, plus it'll be nice to be able to shoot in the winter. Plus, both guns AND gasoline are cheaper than at home.

So tell me about the CCW-getting process in Tennessee? (Actually, tips on getting a driver's license and state residency will help, too.)

Best of all, though? Not a no-fault state. My car insurance rates will drop considerably... :D

I understand your situation, which is not uncommon in many rural or isolated parts of our country ... but delighted in you're improved prospects. However be sure to drop in once and awhile ... :D

Oh, I'm not leaving THR. I mean, geez, after the story (which is spawing something of a mythos of its own, over which I have little control...LOL) I'm like an institution around here.

Okay, that was tooting my own horn a bit, but where else am I going to geek out about guns?

Besides, my buddy that I'm rooming with down there is an MCSE tech guru of sorts. Meaning I'll have a cable modem, but good. Once you've had high speed you can't go back to dial up... :uhoh:

We're headed to Tennessee next year, hopefully, and have dug up some of the info you need.

If you have a Michigan CCW, all you have to do is go to one of the Tennessee offices (Sec of State, Driver's License?) that handle CCW, fill out a 1 page form, pay them $50 and it's processed as a Tennessee renewal. If you don't have a CCW, the application process is similar to Michigan's, except there are no county gun boards and the license is mailed to you.

As I recall, residency is established with 2 pieces of evidence such as a utility bill in your name for a Tennessee address, a paycheck stub, etc. I believe that if you take your documents to a driver's license office, that will sufifce to get your Tennessee DL and establish residency.

All of this info is available on Tennessee's state website. Do a search.

Mmmmm, chicks with southern drawls; yummy.

Indeed. There were a LOT of women running around Knoxville. I mean, women in my age bracket. Gotta love a college town. I'm happy to report that the miniskirt is apparently back in fashion, too. A welcome change after a year in the desert.

I do like it down there. Built up enough for my taste, but not the depressing urban sprawl that makes up the east coast these days. Some things are going to take some getting used to.

Like being called a "yankee", for instance.

"Yankee troublemakers been carpetbagging down round these here parts since the wa-hr of northern aggression..."

Hee hee. :neener:

Night, being a Yank is no problem in Knoxville as that part of the Land of Orange stayed heavily loyal, not as many slaves in the hills.

Watch out for the pollen though! When I was down there it knocked me over like a truck the first day. When I got there I thought no one washed their cars, but it's just the pollen sticking to everything.

Later at hso's I ran my fingers over his hot tub cover and scooped up a ball of pollen. Absolutely amazing. I got acclimated to it after about 24 hours, some never do.

Best to check into meds now just in case.

Re: Michigan

Nightcrawler, Pick me up on your way down. I've been trying to get a transfer to TN for a while now.

My B-I-L said it best: "I don't want to die in Michigan."

Don't forget to check www.packing.org for info on CCW.

Let me know when you get here and we'll go shooting. I only live about an hour from UT and my GF goes to grad school there. I belong to a shooting club in pidgen forge with a couple of different ranges.

Welcome to the South...

Knoxville is a great place and Tenn in general is beautiful.

Check into getting a Florida Non-Resident Permit. Holding one of these allows you to carry in a very large number of southern states.

Enjoy,
Spoon

Congrat's On The Relocation Nightcrawler My Friend-

As to the Great State Of Tennessee, Welcome To The Land Of The Free
And The Home Of The Brave~ :D

If in doubt, just read my signature line! I have a lot of ties to eastern
Tennessee, as my wife was born and basically raised in Sevierville; even
went to school with lil' ole' Dolly. :uhoh: :)

Lots of places to shoot: Cow pastures, back of out houses, down in the
holler 'round Douglas Dam, etc. ;)

One of these days, I hope to meet you there my friend!

I have a hunch Michigan is one of the states that supplies people to others.

I left in 1980, when unemployment in the U.P. was at least a third.

When are you coming and where will you be living?

Give me a shout when you get here and I'll help you get acclimated. (guns and directions only. I lost my skirt-chasing license two years ago. :D )

Moving to Tennessee? You'll get used to G.R.I.T.S. real quick! (thats "girls raised in the South" ) Tamara is up in that area I think. There are several ranges in the Knoxville area. Welcome, come on down.
Mark.

Congrats on the move. TN is one of several states that I would/am considering for myself either for or after grad school.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Do you already have a job lined up down there? If so, may I ask how you found it?

Thanks

I have a line on an okay job and promising prospects on some really good ones. Any of them will be enough to let me go back to school part time so I can finally get my bachelor's.

I'm actually really excited about this. Knoxville is a big city by my standards (but not so big as to spawn the urban sprawl that is everything between Boston and Washington DC these days), and I'm looking forward to it.

The prospect of having a good job to feed my gun habit is nice, too.

I probably won't be there for more than four years. I don't like being in one place too long.

Nightcrawler,

Here's what I tell the anti-gunner yankees that think about moving here.

"This is snakebite country, if you come bring a snakebite kit and a BIG gun, the natives are very unfriendly. Bring lots of Quinine too, the mosquitos and malaria are worse that southeast asia.

High taxes are only rivaled by the bad pollution and inbred natives that hunt each other for sport and cook meth in retired school busses that they live in. The politicians are all crooks and corruption is worse here than Mexico.

should you get lucky and see a good looking woman, she either has herpes or a jealous ex-husband about to get released from an assylum or prison. The Department of Justice has given up on a DNA databank for TN. Everyone has the same family tree and there are no dental records.

If you are looking for an escape from up north, try Arkansas or Mexico, you will like either one better than TN. "

However, if you own a gun for recreation or a fishing pole, you will probably like TN very much and nobody will care where you came from. Even if you have a really bad yankee accent, just tell the folks that you are a refugee from Shelby (Memphis) County. They'll understand. And welcome to TN.
