After a short 18 month of living with his evil womb donor, the offspring has returned home. Which is great, but causes a problem. He now inhabits my gun room. So I have rifles stacked in every nook and cranny. Dad has room for them, but he's all the way in Texas. Still, I only shoot a few of them so I could stand to be away from them. Still have to call the BATF to see what is and isn't kosher, but I guess I'll spend next weekend wrapping my babies. Gonna be lonely around here come Christmas time. :(

How old is youre boy?, And is he gun proofed?
When I was a youngster my brother and I had guns and ammo in our room.
If there are probs with the ex-pain put the ammo in a diff.area.or usetrigger-locks..

The boy ain't the problem. He's 17, very gun savy with a small collection of his own, just took his second deer with a handgun last weekend. However when myself and the wife moved back to Oklahoma he was no longer with us and we moved into a little 2 bedroom hovel. My collection has gotten to the point that it now needs a room to itself. We could just move again, but everytime I mention that the wife gives me THE LOOK.

I wouldn't be parted from my guns for any reasons other than an overseas deployment. Surely you can find some other way/place to store them. Storage cabinets, gun safes. I've seen things that looked like wooden furniture like you would put blankets in that had gun lockers inside of them. Put them under the bed. Hang them on the wall. I've got a big gun safe with goldenrod in the garage. If you put each rifle into one of those "gun socks" you can cram them together pretty darn tight! Old C&R guns take up a lot less space if you pull their bolts and store them someplace else. Just put tags on everything so you know which one goes where.

I just can't imagine "sending my guns" to live somewhere else!

Right now we're talking about 42 long guns with 2 more on the way. And then there are the 10 my son owns. That takes one big cabinet. The wife suggested one of those rental storeage places. I like the idea of the under the bed storage, going to look at that option today. I could just sell them all and buy pistols, easier to store with less space...Nah ain't gonna happen.

I assume the rafters are full? And, if you're creative, you make make use of the space between the walls. I've heard of people using something called "insulation", but I would think "guns" would be more useful. This time of year, couldn't you work out some way to stack them all together, string some lights and pretend it's a tree?

:D

I knew a guy once who used to store rifles in his heating and air ducts. Of course, he used to wear tin foil hats and hid from invisible helicopters.

If the lad is 17, and likes firearms, be sure to let him know that Uncle Sam can enhance his training and love of the smell of burning gunpowder, among other smells.

Everytime the wife says I have too many guns I just point to her shoes. If we got rid of all of her shoes and purses, I would have room for my guns. Of course 5 of the ones I call mine are actually hers.

Hey Okie,
How about :

- Let the kid sleep on the couch, he will be closer to the fridge for late night snacks.

-Get thee to Home Depot or Lowe's. On the aisle with the Shelf Stretchers , they have the Room Stretchers. :D

They do NOT make a Shoe Closet Stretcher btw - had a buddy go down to HD and look...

Your Welcome. :p

Hey Okie,
If you own the house it might be worthwhile to add a new room specially designed for your collection. Alot of the construction work can be done by yourself on your own time if you are handy with a hammer. Another option would be to build a seperate concrete block "shelter" on the property and place your main safe inside it for longer term storage. You can get plans for tornado shelters from FEMA and might even be able to get a tax break or FEMA grant to help with construction. That way you have a nice heavy duty vault like structure to protect you and the family in case of a major storm and also have a place to store the main part of your collection.

If I owned a home

it wouldn't be this one :barf: . I hate this place with a passion. But when we moved back to Oklahoma I had rather unwisely promised to start work in a week. That gave us 7 days to find a place and move. I took the first place avaliable. Big mistake on my part. Place has been nothing but a PITA since we moved in. I figure to be in position to buy in about 3 years, so I guess I can live with it for that long. When I'm buying again, one room is mine alone for all my toys.
Right now I'm waiting for my local BATF agent to call me back, but I'm guessing it will be a no-no to move most of my collection.

Ahhh, in that case I would get or build an under the bed cabiinet that you can lock part of the collection inside. I remember a while back that someone posted a link to a set of sliding lockbox drawers that could be mounted under the bed and were the perfect size for long gun storage, throw a set on each side of the bed and that could take care of between 10 and 20 guns right there. In addition to that most of the metal gun cabinets out there will fit inside a closet so you could pick up one of those for the closet in your son's room and get a cheapie stand alone wardrobe for him to use for his clothes. Wal-Mart carries an easily assembled wardrobe with drawers in the bottom that would be ideal for him.

I figure between the 2 beds and the cabinet I just moved to behind my chair (gotta love that, I can just reach behind my chair and touch my favorites) I can handle most of them. Just hate to have them in the dark, they get scared you know.
Just got rid of some of my shoe problem when the wife gave the son's GF a bunch of shoes. They wear the same size shoe. Come to think of it, they wear the same size of several things. Nice to know the boy's been paying attention. :D
