What’s the process involved?

This is for a few short - barrelled rifles and suppressors.

I heard that a certain form needs to be mailed, and one needs to wait for acknowledgment from the ATF.

If anyone could further expound on this, that would be great...

With a question that could affect you liberty or lack thereof for the next ten years, I strongly suggest that you call you local ATF office and get the information from the source.

Good Luck

Jerry

IIRC, you need a Form 5, and
Form 5 is definitely not the one to use.
F5's are tax exempt and only for:
Firearm is unserviceable and is being transferred as a curio or ornament
Firearm is being transferred to or from a Government Entity
Firearm is being transferred to a lawful heir or by operation of law

it's not a permission--they will not send you back an acknowledgement)--it's an administrative form.
Yes, they will return it. Otherwise the applicant will have no idea if he was approved.

This reminds me that when we moved to PA I got the response back for my 5320.20 from the ATF the same week my wife got a letter from the DEA about her new DEA registration number. I wonder what the mailman was thinking...
Husband and Wife work for the Feds?

Form 5320.20.
But it is supposed to be submitted before you move so you have a copy, in hand, to cross State lines.
Of course, they must be legal to own in the State you are moving to.
That form also acts a a change of permanent address for your stamps in the ATF system.

Not bad, all things considered - pandemic and all.
