I suggest you check out the ghetto, where we all live,Crystal Lake.DES Plaines is ugly & noisy. I drive the bus. It's 28 miles to ORD. There is Gat guns close by to shoot n shop, kinda run down but good people and crystal lake just approved a new range to be built. My fav place is my outdoor club, Aurora Sportsmans Club, just south of the DKB NDB. 50' to 600yds. We're looking for members. The ranges recognize the new Mexico vacation stuff & give discounts. The kids at walmart have no idea ....it's like that iPhone 4 cartoon on you tube ;-)

I was born and raised in Chicago. Lived there until I went to college and joined the Army.

  1. You do NOT want to live in Chicago. It's a corrupt, dangerous cesspool.
  2. You do NOT want to live in Illinois if you can help it. My mother lives very close to Indiana. Why she choose to move out of Chicago, but stay in Illinois is a mystery known only to her.

Chicago has a 12 round round limit on magazines. Move to a suburb or Indiana. Its a good thing you have the safe, you want those weapons under lock and key.

O'Hare

Mstrat

O'hare is in Chicago It was annexed by Chicago many years ago. They took all the territory that is now O'hare and the Kennedy Expressway leading to O'Harein March of 1956

Whoops - thanks for the correction. I always assumed it was Rosemont.
Lol.. I just checked a map out of curiosity, and it's as if they drew a little sliver down Higgens connecting Chicago proper to ORD. That's crazy. Not that I'm surprised; the Chicago machine will do anything and everything to fill its coffers.

Anyhow, my point still stands... You still have to go out of your way to live in the city limits. North, South, West (and even east, if you stay off of Higgens) will put you in another town. There are loads of housing around O'Hare that's not Chicago, and closer than Chicago (sans the annexed airport land).

And I'll take another opportunity to re-emphasize that you really want to go a step further and try to find a home in Kane, Dupage, or any other county that isn't Cook.

Edit: here's a map if anyone's curious: http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/maps/chidense.gif
The black line is the city border, and the non-contiguous lump in the northeast is O'Hare.

Haha.. i still find that funny. It's like if IL decided it wanted to annex Nebraska, so it just claimed a sliver all the way through MO to make sure it's connected.

O'Hare

It was pretty simple. O'Hare was originally the property of the AirForce (Federal Government). The City of Chicago bought the airport from the Government and annexed the property and access to the airport from Chicago proper.

O'Hare is actually outside the Chicago city limits so you can live in one of the suburbs. I would suggest finding a residence along the CTA Blue Line, like maybe Rosemont. This train literally goes right into O'Hare, when you exit the train you're already inside the building. This is great for cold and snowy days when traffic will be backed up. Click the links below to see the Blue Line stops:

Are you kidding me? O'Hare IS part of Chicago, they are not outside the city-limits of Chicago as they are part of it. Des Plaines is decent low-cost suburb, no registration, AW bans, or any non-sense like that, plus they got a range and gun-shop in that town. Please, I know everyone thinks every city in north-east Illinois has strict laws, but do your homework, ever heard of homerule? cities and towns in Cook Co. IL that regulate gun-shops by issuing their own rules are exempt from Crook County gun laws.

Here's what I would do regarding the FOID application:

1. Apply for your IL driver's license immediately.
2. When you get your DL, apply for the FOID the same week.
3. Don't go shooting or try to buy ammo until you get your FOID card. FOID turnaround is generally about 30 days.

IANAL, but I think that would cover you in all cases. I doubt any judge is going to throw you in jail for being a "resident" without a FOID, if you can demonstrate that you owned them legally in your previous state and you applied for the FOID in a timely manner.

It's a non-contiguous part of Chicago, just as the Instrumented Tank Range is a non-contiguous part of Fort Knox. You actually have to drive off of Fort Knox, down the road, and past Knob Creek to get to it. O'Hare is in a similar situation vis a vis Chicago.

I was born in Chicago and raised in Cook County. But that was before most gun laws! Anyway, other choices would be Bensenville, Elmhurst, Wood Dale, Addison,or Itasca. All are close to O'Hare (Bensenville is immediately southwest of the airport), and all are in DuPage County. None, I think, are as expensive as Schaumburg. And except Addison, all are on Metra lines.

Oh, yeah, one other thing: Spring in Chicago is one day -- May 23. Before then, it's too cold. After then, it's too hot! So you only have one good shooting day anyway!
