Hey all,

I will be moving this summer from MI to Florida and will be a resident in Florida for the next few years for work. I will sign up for a Florida driver's license, etc.

I have looked at a few places online and am unsure if Florida will recognize my CCW license (from Michigan). As I would like to transfer my long guns and handguns legally I would be interested in what else I have to do.

Welcome to the Gunshine State

Florida has no registration or licensing for ownership of firearms, I can't address the reciprocity for MI.
floridashootersnetwork.com would be a good board to join. Outside of a couple smart crackers (you'll see the pun's meaning when you move) good knowledgeable folks.
What part of the state are you moving to? You'll need to find a range.

Your Michigan CCW will be good in Florida for only 90 days once you establish residency in Florida.

790.015 Nonresidents who are United States citizens and hold a concealed weapons license in another state; reciprocity.—
(1) Notwithstanding s. 790.01, a resident of the United States who is a nonresident of Florida may carry a concealed weapon or concealed firearm while in this state if the nonresident:
(a) Is 21 years of age or older; and
(b) Has in his or her immediate possession a valid license to carry a concealed weapon or concealed firearm issued to the nonresident in his or her state of residence.
(2) A nonresident is subject to the same laws and restrictions with respect to carrying a concealed weapon or concealed firearm as a resident of Florida who is so licensed.
(3) If the resident of another state who is the holder of a valid license to carry a concealed weapon or concealed firearm issued in another state establishes legal residence in this state by registering to vote, or making a statement of domicile pursuant to s. 222.17, or filing for homestead tax exemption on property in this state, the license shall remain in effect for 90 days following the date on which the holder of the license establishes legal state residence. This section applies only to nonresident concealed weapon or concealed firearm licenseholders from states that honor Florida concealed weapon or concealed firearm licenses.

As far as your firearms are concerned, there is no "transfer" of them. Just bring them with you to Florida and that's it.

In addition to the above

12) No license issued pursuant to this section shall authorize any person to carry a concealed weapon or firearm into any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05; any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station; any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse; any courtroom, except that nothing in this section would preclude a judge from carrying a concealed weapon or determining who will carry a concealed weapon in his or her courtroom; any polling place; any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district; any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof; any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; any school administration building; any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose; any elementary or secondary school facility; any area technical center; any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile; inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport, provided that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, which firearm is encased for shipment for purposes of checking such firearm as baggage to be lawfully transported on any aircraft; or any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law. Any person who willfully violates any provision of this subsection commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

The reason your CCW is legal for 90 days is that it takes that long to get your FL CCW at the moment - they have to, by law, get you your CCW in 90 days

Hey thanks guys. So just so im clear....do I have to repeat a ccw course for florida in order to be eligible for a florida ccw or can I just send a copy of my current license to someone in order to get a permit.

Thanks!

Its been to my knowledge florida is a better state as far as gun rights (as well as other things). Congrats as well for escaping michigan. I don't know what keeps me here.

Take your ccw out of your holster and lock in in the trunk while you are driving through Illinois as they will not honor your permit. Don't know about the other states you will be traveling through, but you may want to check. Everything else, just follow the standard interstate transport laws.

If you're coming to the Tampa area...

There's several folks here who can do your CCW training real cheap (I'm one), and you can apply for your license at one of the state offices in town. They do everything on line, and you get your CCW license in a week or two.
