Hk91-762mm:

Ok, first off do not fear Louisville, there are plenty of pro-gun folk living in and around Jefferson County. As someone pointed out there are a few really liberal areas, but I still walk around the highlands, mostly because some of the best upscale restaurants are on Bardstown road. There are also a lot of relatively good bar-b-que places as well. Also try out Skyline Chilly its either a place you will love or hate. I love it.

Some one mentioned Knob Creek Gun Range, but some how forgot to mention the Machine Gun Shoot. In fact the next one is the first weekend in April I believe, you should definatley check it out. Most of the major players in firearms come down.

Also you are going to have to pick your favorite college sports team. Your choices are University of Louisville or those other guys (University of Kentucky, which is in Lexington). But this is important, you must choose.

We have car taxes, but the only tax for guns would be the sales tax when you buy it.

When ever you get in town you should let me know. Would love to help move, show you around, etc.

Elizabethtown is a good area that is outside of Jefferson County. You can find cheap acreage out there. If you were to want to live in Jefferson County I would suggest either J-Town or Middletown personally but im from this area so....

I would agree that Lexington would be more liberal the Louisville. Of course people from Lex would probably say the same about me.

Also to all:
As sarge83 pointed out:
You can carry in your glove box without a permit.

If its not clear in the above quote you can in KY, have in your glove box a loaded firearm, and the glove box doesn't have to be locked. Without a permit.

I almost forgot, there is no wait in the city of Louisville when purchasing a handgun anymore.

KY is beautiful. wear your seatbelt. make sure your suspension and brakes are in good shape.

No one in Ashland supports Louisville. Ashland is a long way from Louisville and UK is the state team by a long shot. Lots of Ashand players have went on to play at UK too which draws more fans to UK. But I've lived in this part of the country most of my life except for a few stints in the city (including a year in Lexington) and I know exactly one UL fan and he's one of those guys who just likes to poke his finger in people's eyes for fun. Trust me on this. UK is THE team in this part of the state and in southern Ohio too (except for football of course).

Also gun ranges in Louisville aren't going to be too important to someone who lives in Ashland. There are a number of gun ranges in the area with the Greenup Wildlife Club having the best one I've been to. There's another nice one in Argillite and a couple in Ohio. If you can remember that and where Border's Gun Shop is you're way out in front already. There are plenty of other gun shops too including some nice ones in Huntington WV. I've bought guns from Borders and from Mack And Dave's in Huntington and several other gun shops. Also flea markets are a great source for guns I suppose but I prefer buying from a gun shop because you know where to find the guy who sold you the gun if it is junk. Many gun shops give you a warranty here even on used guns.

I was not addressing the original poster. I was addressing Hk91-762mm he said he would also be moving to KY, maybe to Elizabethtown, which is close to Louisville so my responses would be relevant to him.

Welcome to Ky! I grew up in Ashland and still have family there. It's a great place. BTW they're not kidding about sports. An animated discussion can be started anywhere, anytime by simply asking "how about them Cats?"

I'm also originally from Michigan and it is shameful to watch a state so rich in resources and a great location (great lakes, coastline, wildlife, natural atmosphere, construction, resources, automobile industry, huge international border, river to the ocean, fishing, game, some small mountains, mining, etc.) just go down the tank due to corrupt politics.

I am now working in Kentucky (I live just across the border in Clarksville, TN, an equally good gun state), so if you are ever near Fort Campbell look me up. BTW there is a gunshow in Oak Grove this weekend.

I don't spend a lot of time in KY, but I do drive through sometimes and it is nice scenery and the people are friendly enough, and it has relaxed gun laws.

Welcome.

:) The More of these post I read The more I cant wait to move ..
DO you have to wear seat belts in the car ?? helmet on bikes?? [ I wear them both But hate being told I have to]..
Is Open land to shoot on That difficult to come by-?? seems everyone is looking for a range when I come to KY I see lots of open land .
I timed the drive on the interstate from Louis- to-wards Cinci -It took 25 Min's drive to be in the country. So you could actually work in a city and commute home [My wife is a terrible driver DONT TELL her I said so! ] The most important thing is that she can get a job and drive to it..
I have spoken to several people on PM- and On the phone to several others from KY and all have been extremely helpful and nice !
All I have to do is get the wife through college and get her into a career job she Likes [shes 46- I'm 57 ] ill be retiring in 10 years she will be working for another 20 I hope .
I hope we can find enough open land with a barn type building and fixer home to buy where I can have a shop and a place to shoot ..

Sorry for the confusion.

No problem. I should have bolded the persons handle I was addressing. Thanks for giving the original poster ideas about Ashland.

DO you have to wear seat belts in the car ??

There is a law now that you have to wear a seat belt. The police can pull you over for not wearing it, even if you weren't speeding. Previously it could only be added on to another violation, like speeding.

I happened to visit Ashland Ky about 20 years ago. I was working for an egg company called Agri General, who had a plant in Ashland and Norwalk Ohio, where I was from. Ashland had the nicest people, very friendly. I might move to Kentucky myself soon, the house is going up for sale next month, wish me luck!

why do people keep calling my beloved birthplace a state? It is a Commonwealth, Like VA. Probably a correlation between the commonwealth status and good gun laws? Cuz VA is one too, and it has good (mostly common sense) laws in regards to firearms

Welcome!

I live in Ashland as well... actually south of I-64 out in the county:)

I'm sure that you will find the gun culture around here very enjoyable.

Like others have said, Kentucky is a very hospitable place, and North Eastern Fish and Game Club is very nice place to go shoot!

Borders Sporting goods is a good place too... often very busy and crowded but top notch service!

The only downside that I see in Ashland is the lack of good restaurants... that can easily be solved by a 20 minute drive to huntington WV though.

If you ever want to go shooting or need anything feel free to PM me :)

One thing I will point out, you must be a resident of KY for at least 6 months before you can take the CC safety class and get your permit. Until then open carry is perfectly legal if dubious with the general populace. I've been using my FL non-resident permit, got 3 months to go.

why do people keep calling my beloved birthplace a state?

Because we have 50 states in the USA. KY is one of them. Ever hear of the Kentucky State Police? The Virginia State Police?:scrutiny:

Hk91-762mm You will be able to find land to buy if you don't mind a little drive. I was raised in the western part of the state, but now live in Louisville. As far as places to shoot you will be able to find ranges with out to much problem. If you like to hunt ky has allot of public hunting land spread all over the state. We have a nice size deer population and lots of turkey and elk. The elk is on a lottery basis to get a tag last year they gave 400 tags this it will be 1000 the heard is doing great and they are on public land to hunt on as well. If you like water when have some very nice lakes and good fishing. Bring all the guns you can and enjoy using them. Until you get your CDW if you have a gun in the cab of a car with you IT HAS TO BE IN THE FACTORY DASH COMPARTMENT. Unlocked loaded is fine (great) but it is the only place you can have it not on the seat dash back seat under the seat.If you have any questions about the state, what where how to do anything pm me I will be more then happy to give any info I can.

I used to live in KY and go there frequently. I have family there. As far as guns go, just move and stash them where ever you desire in your abode.

If you are an outdoors kind of person, start hitting the state parks and learning about all the wonderful scenery that KY offers. It is a great state overall.

Yes, you do have to choose which college team you support unless you like to be a rebel and pick FL or TN. :)

I'm a UK grad, a 10th generation West Kentuckian & a Lifetime NRA Member for +50 years since the day I was born (thanks Grandpa!). You'll find few places left in the world more pro-gun, pro-shooting and pro-individual responsibility than the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Jacksonian political views are still alive & well 'round heah. Y'all come see us when ya' can.

This fine show of Kentucky hospitality is contagious. Thought I better chime in.We moved to Kentucky in November of 1990 from the Stalinist state just to the north. I fell in love with the state immediately and haven't looked back. Then, 13 years ago we moved out into the county and got some horses. That was a move to heaven! I met some great folks that like to shoot, joined a club and started expanding my shootin' collection. I echo all that has been said about the reasonable lack of obtrusive gun laws. It's reassuring to hear the gunfire on the weekends. Just means my neighbors are sightin' in their hunting rifles or the guy across the way is plinking with his son. And, in the recent ice storm we just endured, neighbors helping neighbors was the rule of the day.

Haha! I refer to the state of our dear new president, Illinois.

Edited to add - I live in far western KY, just across the Ohio River from Illinois on I-24.

I worked in KY back in 2003, and lived in Ashland while I was there.

A great town, and friendly people. I worked at the refinery in Catlettsburg and met many fine people.

The gun laws are great, you can find guns almost anywere in KY.

I could move there, no problem. Of course, I live in Illinois so most states are an upgrade. :D

How do you all feel about southern Indiana, say around Madison, or Milton or
Carrolton Ky? I will be moving to that area soon.

Madison is good for the boat race. I would live in ky if I had the choice they have better gun laws. carrolton is a nice place on the smaller side but has done alot of growing the last few years. I would vote for Carrolton.

One thing that people seem to never agree on is where to place Kentucky, Northerners say we are Southern, Southerners say we are Northern, Easterners say we are Western, and Westerners say we are Eastern. Sometimes I think they're all right, but to tell the true I really don't give a hoot. Went to school with a girl from California and she said her friends back home thought we didn't wear shoes. :p

We kind of pick on those Kentuckians across the State line. Truth is, they are 'right good' neighbors, and there's nothing wrong with those that are a 'bit' old fashioned on occasion. Sometimes, we learn from example!

Welcome to the neighborhood.

My wife's from Kentucky and her whole family only wore shoes for church..... :)
