Moving to Texas; Enlighten Me!

It ain't crapping, it's the way it is. Although tongue in cheek, everything I posted I observed in the years I lived in Texas. Several times. Matter of fact, in Moab I had a guy stop dead in front of me when making a right hand turn that had a clear lane for for merging. Jokingly I said "Must have learned to drive in Texas. Yep, the truck had Texas plates.

Is everything bad in Tejas? Nope. Those folks know how to eat! But they have some real strange quirks down in that corner of reality. Lots of folks who live there will tell you Texas is God's country. If so, he has a cruel sense of humor. It's no exaggeration that folks were plenty unfriendly because to me, Texas was just another place with miserable heat, not God's country. They also didn't like that I don't do cliques. My friends are mine regardless what others think of them. Don't take that as a blanket statement, just a generality. I'm too independent to live in Texas, plain and simple.

Don't take my critique too seriously and I truly hope you enjoy living there. But- If all you bother to listen to folks gushing about The Great State of Texas, you're going to be in for a great big let down. (I'll admit this once, though- I'd rather live in Texas than Chicago)

PS- If you can't laugh at what I wrote about Texas, don't go. You won't find it funny down there either
All you really seem to do is complain about bad drivers. Believe me, I've traveled a bit in my day and they exist everywhere. One of these places that I've been to, amazingly, is Texas. Actually, I've visited Texas more than I have any other state. So it's not like I'm 100% new to the state. This thread originally started as a range/CHL recommendation thread and I'd like it to stay that way so it stays open. Thanks for your input and opinion.

+1

Ive traveled all over the US and World. Texas has the same driving issues everyone else does... Stupid knows no borders.

now back to guns... Cabela's gun library is pretty cool to go check out or purchase something. Its outside of Ft. Worth headed toward Denton on 287. Academy is generally a lot cheaper than Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, etc. Thou they dont have a huge selection of guns. Lots of small gun shops and as someone mentioned previously there is a gun show damn near every weekend in this state...

I am definitely going to buy a gun when I get down there to experience what it's like to walk in and leave with a gun in my hand. There is actually an Academy within about a 5 minute drive from my apartment so that will definitely come in handy. The wife and I actually stopped and looked around when we were there a week ago, nice place

In defense of Mistwolf, he is correct when he states that the shortest distance between two points in Houston is probably under construction. Most folks think our state flower is the Bluebonnet, but in reality it is the orange and white striped traffic cone.

Have you ever been to Illinois? This is something I deal with on a daily basis as well

Getting back to original topic - Places to shoot :

Elm Fork - between Dallas and DFW Airport. Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Archery
closed on Mondays

Quail Creek - north of Ft. Worth, and north of the Speedway. Pistol, Rifle,
Archery, also offers CHL and advanced courses.

Terrell Rifle and Pistol Club - Members only, but they have monthly shoots that everyone can come to - East of Dallas about 45 mins.

Tac-Pro - Mingus Texas. Haven't been there yet, but I have good reports from other shooters.

Dallas Pistol Club - Private membership, one-yr waiting list, but open to non-members when they have monthly matches.

Dallas Gun Club - Very pricey, private membership. Most shooting involves shotgun sports, but does have other ranges for rifle and pistol. If you can go with a member for a visit, be sure and order a cheeseburger from the grill!

Winchester/Shooting Gallery - Ft Worth. Not in the best part of town, but a good place to do some indoor shooting when it's too hot to be outdoors. Good gunsmith on site and you can also rent guns here.

ShootSmart - new range near the Ft Worth Cabelas store. Haven't been there yet, but I will soon!

That's a pretty good start on the area ranges, but doesn't cover all of them. They all have their good points and bad points about them, but I have never had any problems on any of these ranges.

Don't pay attention to all the other BS being spouted here in this thread - us Texans are full of it, especially when we are picking on each other! It's considered to be an "endearment" I think - kind of like picking on your siblings!

Hope you get settled in easily and find a good place to exercise your freedom!:)
