Hello all

I just arrived back in Arizona after going to Utah for a job interview. I have a good feeling about the job. Regardless if I get this position or not, we are seriously considering still moving there. If I do get this position, I will be there in about a month.

I have an AZ CCW permit that Utah accepts. If I moved there, would I still be able to use my AZ permit or would it become invalid as soon as I became a resident of Utah?

I do plan on getting a Utah permit but would hate to go a couple of months waiting on a permit.

Thanks!

I believe that all states require you to obtain their resident permits once you establish residency.

As a small measure of comfort, I got my Utah non-resident CCW in five weeks, so your wait should not be as long.

mbogo

Do love that state, however I'm not sure Utah honors Arizona's CCW, as I do know Nevada does not. I know my daughter in law got her permit and didn't even have to fire a shot in Arizona. Did something change?

I'm wondering if you just couldn't apply and get it now, before you moved. Utah makes no distinction between residency and non-residency on the permit. Once you get settled all you'd have to do is notify the Dept of Public Safety of a change of address. And the permit conveniently has the e-mail address for that right on the back of the permit.

Utah honors the permits of all states.

If you want a legal opinion on your situation, check with Mitch Vilos. He's Utah's firearm attorney.

Nobody's going to give you any crap if you have a valid permit and move here, and carry with your valid permit in good faith while you're waiting for your UT permit.

IMO

I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, though...

BTW just a tip from a native; try to enjoy Utah for its many benefits and positives, rather than trying to change everything to be like the place you left. (I say this mostly to ex-californians who have a habit of doing this :D )

Get your Utah CFP

You'll be mostly ok with your AZ permit, but get your Utah CFP anyway. Utah law exempts CFP-holders from the Utah GFSZA, but the federal law is worded such that you likely have to have a Utah CFP to carry in a school in Utah. Reciprocity doesn't come into play there.

And you can get it now, or at least just start the process, then a quick phone call to BCI after you move to update your address, and you're all good.

IANAL

That can't be true can it? I thought no one honored California's permit.

(2) The provisions of Subsections 76-10-504(1) and (2), and Section 76-10-505 do not apply to any person to whom a permit to carry a concealed firearm has been issued:
(a) pursuant to Section 53-5-704; or
(b) by another state or county.

Nothing is specific other than it is issued buy a state or county.

Well I was offered and accepted the position with one of the utility companies in Salt Lake City. I will be working out of the Bluffdale office. I have a lot of work cut out for me in the next month. Thanks everyone for the help.

As we see from this map, Utah honors Arizona permits.

Utah makes no distinction between residency and non-residency on the permit.

AZ doesn't make a residency distinction either.

Congrats.

As someone that's moved 'out of state' a couple of times, Yes, you do have a lot of work ahead. But it sounds like you're excited about it and that's great!

Welcome to Utah! I have lived a lot of places and always find myself back here. The gun laws are about as 2A friendly as you are going to find anywhere. Bluffdale is a great area too. Good luck with your move!

This is untrue in Missouri; in Missouri the Missouri State Highway Patrol released a brochure pointing this out ( http://www.mshp.dps.mo.gov/MSHPWeb/Publications/Brochures/documents/SHP-863.pdf ).

In fact there's been something of a hullabaloo because there's a current Groupon offer to get AZ safety training online, which would qualify you to get an AZ permit and it would be accepted here for residents, which means that MO residents can have a valid CCW in MO without going through the laughable MO shooting requirements. But to people who don't know, it seems like a bad thing.

Welcome to Utah. See ya on the firing line!
