Mozilla Firefox = Anti firearm bias?

Just gave them all a try, out of curiosity. On the Windows box, nothing wrong with IE6, Firefox 1.0.4, Opera 8.0 (would be my favorite, if it didn't cost anything). On Linux, Mozilla 1.6 worked fine, lynx didn't. Solaris, Firefox 1.0.3 worked, as did the dreaded Netscape Communicator 4.78.

The only thing that didn't appear to work was the text based Lynx.

Well grampster, you are not alone because I had issues with Firefox too. I cannot say that they were specifically with firearms related sites though. Its predecessor, Firebird, worked great and I used that almost as soon as it was available. Firefox, however, ran very poorly on my computer. I even tried installing it on a totally fresh Windows installation and it ran poorly in my opinion. It seemed to utilize way too much CPU time (2.8 Ghz Pentium 4). I switched to Opera and have not looked back at either Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Nothing wrong with Firefox.

Opera, however, shows evidence of actually being pro-gun (downloadable pro-gun "panel"). And my workplace buys licenses for the employees as an anti-spyware measure.

Happy browsing. :)

I use Firefox as well, and I have never had a problem. Firefox links to the google search engine, and in addition it is open source. If there was any bias in the coding of Firefox, it would be easily discovered by other members of the OS community.

On a somewhat related note (and to temporarily hijack the thread), I think the accusation of bias was unnecessarily hasty. There's a theory known as Hanlon's Razor:
"Never ascribe to malice that which can adequately be explained by incompetence"
Grampster, I don't mean to call you incompetent (sorry; it's just the way the quote is phrased!), but in this case, it appears to be a faulty configuration, not a malicious attempt to censor gunnies. Asking the question as simply "does anybody else have trouble with Firefox?" would have avoided that apparent accusation.

How often do we complain when black leaders scream "racism!" at the tiniest thing? Oprah recently got her knickers in a wad when she wasn't allowed in a store, and screamed racism. Turns out the store was closed; she'd gotten there after the store's posted hours. Incompetence, not malice. When we sling accusations--even implied or apparent accusations, as in this case--we undermine our own credibility, and come off looking paranoid. We need to be mindful of that, and make sure we've exhausted all of our own remedies before we start levelling accusations at others.

Back on topic, grampster, did you ever get it working? If not, send me a PM (or post here, so the discussion will be available for all to reference) and I'll try to help you troubleshoot it.

My understanding is that forum sites typically require storage of cookie files to be enabled.

Following up on suggestions already made but trying to be specific, ensure cookies are enabled by doing the following:

context: Firefox v 1.0.4 Win XP

Select [Tools] from the menu line at the top of the window.

Select [Privacy]

Select [Cookies]

Check [Allow sites to set cookies]

Personally, I have set the aging option to [Keep cookies until they expire].

Hope this helps.

No problems here. I use Firefox for everything. (IE is an abomination.)

Flyboy makes some great points. (Isn't it Akums Razor?)

On both here and TFL (and Glocktalk) I had horrible problems with Firefox and Safari (I run an iMac at home). Turned out that the problem was caused by running Norton Anti Virus's pop up ad blocker at the same time as the pop up ad blocker on Safari or Firefox somehow prevented me from posting.

It was strange but when I cut back on Norton things worked out fine.

As for Mac virus comments - we have a PC at home that sometimes hooks up to our Mac network and its easier to clear viruses out of emails, etc on the Mac (where they just lie dormant) than to deal with them on the PC. The Macs aren't effected, but they can become carriers.

holy paranoia

abou the mOST absurd thing i have seen yet, thanks for the laugh.
IE is out to get you (but only by bill gates laziness)

FIREFOX RULES. anyone surfing with anything less - well, i feel bad for your hard drive.

firefox anti gun. that's a good one.
-oh i guess it lets people like me on THR no prob cuz i am annoying maybe???

there you go full blown intelligent browser browser site denial/ acceptance

I usually have each child forum of THR and TFL open in several tabs in Firefox, no problems. I only run IE to connect to Windows Update or the odd media page.

Real Gun: Thanks for taking pity on an old guy who barely is able to navigate the internet. Your advice worked perfectly with Firefox security re: cookies. Your simple answer to a question is appreciated. Someone else mentioned my anti-virus provider may need to ramp down cookie blockage. I have McAfee and I added THR and TFL to my list of "always accept cookies" and it appears, since I am posting this via Firefox, it has worked.

Re: My anti-gun comment. It was meant to keep the thread gun related and to also gain some comments that might be helpful to me. It seems that it worked. For those of you who took the opportunity to rub my nose in it a bit, I am a man of charity and able to suffer fools. :neener: I have been one from time to time. :D

Firefox = Anti firearm bias?

Umm...this is a tech geek question. Not everything is related to guns.

Lovingly posted using Mozilla,
publius

(edit: Oops! Hadn't seen the post from ten minutes before mine!)
