I'm looking at the Mueller Tactical Scope, it's 8.5-25x44mm and it's priced at $159.99. I've heard that Mueller compares to other higher priced scopes, but I wasn't sure if it was worth the risk spending less money for a fairly new company name. Should I just go with well known and trusted Nikon scopes or does the Mueller compare?

Any help would be great...

I'm going to be putting it on a Rem 700 sps 'for both target shooting (100-500yrds), and hunting.'

Did you hear that from an objective person, or the Mueller marketing literature?
It may be better than other $159 scopes, but It won't compare to say a leupold of identical specs. Optics is one area you don't get something for nothing, so if you buy this expecting it will compare to a Nightforce or something, don't bother. That said, you do have to be careful not to get too sucked into the hype with the big names as well. It really depends on what you are going to use it for and at what level. If you are going to punch paper at 100 yards and are happy with MOA, the Mueller might be OK. If you just want to have fun on a casual level out to 500 or so, a nikon/tasco SS/Burris/Leupold lower end will work fine. Start getting into serious tactical/Benchrest/1000K etc...you'd probably want to go up another notch to the better leupolds, S&B, or Nightforce etc...Just my 2 cents, but figure out exactly what you need the scope to do, and that will help decide. You know, if you are mounting it to your SPS, depending on the caliber and your goals, a ~$2,000 Nightforce might not be the best choice especially since it seems like money is a factor for you, so for an SPS around ~$300 would be reasonable for a scope budget. That gets you a decent leupold, burris, nikon or tasco SS.

I just opened the box from MidwayUSA and have been looking through my Mueller APV. The optics are clear and bright. My only complaint is that the silver finish is not perfectly even. The scope is also a little heavy but I knew that when I bought the scope. This weekend my 10/22 will be back together and I will shoot the gun and tell you what I think of the scope.

The gun is being built for bench rest competition and for small game hunting so I had to make some compromises on scope power and size, the APV is 4.5x14x40.

The so-called "brightness" of a scope tells you nothing. Put a big 'ol diameter objective using window pane glass on it and it will be bright. The true test entails cranking the power all the way up and looking for clarity (especially around the outer edges), and performing the box test to validate the accuracy of the turrets and internals. Most cheap scopes will fail one or both of these tests. Also, I had to laugh about Mueller's website. In their FAQ section, they answered the hypothetical question of "Why are Mueller scopes so cheap?', without even mentioning that they are made in China.

I haven't run a box test on my Mueller APV that's on my CZ 452 American, but I sure like the scope. Yes, Leupold is better, but it's also twice the price. I may put a Mueller Tactical on the next centerfire I buy. Have to seen how the money holds out.
