Howdy,

This is my first post here at The Highroad.org. I've lurked around long enough I figured it's about time I shared my little project.

A couple months ago I bought a new rifle, a Ruger 10/22. Since then I've been modifying it.

Here's a timeline for it.

Started with this:: factory synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel. I mounted a Tasco red dot sight I had previously used on my pistol.

Then to this with an ATI Fiberforce stock, Weaver aluminum rings and a Bushnell scope::

I didn't like the black stock so I painted it with Krylon Fusion for Plastic Hunter Green paint and added a muzzlebrake::

While I liked the look of the stock alot and it's pistol grip, I did not like the cheek placement area. It was not easy to get comfortable. So I ditched that stock and went for this one. It's a Tapco T6. It's a keeper for sure!

I drilled and mounted a sling stud on the underside so I could use my bi-pod. I had to change the scope rings for a higher set. It's a shame because I really like those aluminum rings. *sigh*

This is the latest pic with the longer SS barrel.

Total mods so far::

Tapco T6 OD Green stock
Walmart 22" Stainless Steel barrel
Weaver 10/22 "See Thru" rings
Bushnell 4-12x40 AO scope
VQ bolt buffer
VQ auto bolt release
VQ extended mag release
VQ target hammer and springs
muzzle brake <= painted it myself using Krylon black radiator paint. The original finish on it sucked.
Shooters Ridge bi-pod
Steel Lips 25 round mag

(VQ = Volquartsen) One of the top brands for aftermarket 10/22 hardware.

That's a rather impressive dress-up project to be sure - that T6 looks darn spiffy!

I'm not sure I would have gone with the brake myself, but just don't forget to get the kit & kaboodle to the range and do a live-fire report for us...

Looking good! How's it shooting for you? Have you had anything done to the chamber, or considered a better barrel?

Thanks for the replies.

The muzzle brake is purely for looks.

As for how it shoots... Well. I haven't been able to get it to the range since adding the new T6 stock and longer barrel. I stay home with the kids during the summer. Hopefully I'll get some time next week. My wife will be home on 2 weeks vacation and then I'll get some range time.

It shot well enough for my liking when I had it in the ATI stock. I was popping 1 inch groups at 50 yards with little effort.

Thanks man.:)

I'll tell ya what. My finding Rimfirecentral.com was a bad bad thing for my wallet. Some of the rifles people have built there are just outta this world. I wish I had that kind of money to play with. As is I'm in the doghouse for this rifle.:uhoh:

But still... It's a hoot to shoot!:D

The other rifle I have is actually my wife's. It's an Anschutz Model 54 1411. I think it's the 1411 stock. Her uncle had modified it for her. I met my wife on the high school rifle team. Yup. My old high school has a rifle range in the basement. :neener:

Anyway... After sitting in the closet for over 15 years, I took it out, cleaned it up and mounted a scope on it.

I'm proud to say that I can hunt flies at 50 yards with it.

Yes that's what's left of a fly that landed on my target. :D I use 1 inch sticker dots as targets at 50 yards.

I am a fan of the 10/22 but an Anshutz 54 will usually make the most highly modified one wimper for mercy.
At my club we have a summer league that shoots rimfire at 100 yds. I have learned a whole lot !

The 10/22 is one of the greatest rifles to "upgrade".
Here is my little 10/22:

and yes, there is a GemTech Outback suppressor on it!

Oh No!!!

You took a beautiful, wood stocked, sporting rifle and turned it into an evil, assault weapon/sniper rifle combo...oh the humanity, it's down right frightening.

I like the way you think!

You know, I never really did get the whole 10-22 thing. I got one of mine mine for less than $90 out the door, and I shoot it, occasionally. I did get a folding stock for it simply because the short LOP on a tradtional stock wasnt comfortable to me. Then it wouldnt fit in the case so the wood had to go back on.

So now, I have two pretty much stock 10-22s, and no desire to mod either one. I dont know why.

My finding Rimfirecentral.com was a bad bad thing for my wallet.
Ah, thats why. I avoid RFC primarily over the wallet issue...

Modding a .22caliber like that is like modding a 4cylinder. You can put all the money you want into it, but in the end its just a 4cylinder :)

I never understood why people put hi-power scopes and heavy barrels on .22's

I guess if your into bench shooting its fun though. I'm more of hunter type and like my guns to have actual uses.

I must say, cosmetically the OP gun looks mighty Fine!!! Well done. Lovely stock.

Use smaller target dots...

Using a one-inch dot at 50 yards is a whole two minutes of angle! That gun will do better than that.

If anyone out there is looking to build a whoop-tushy 10/22, check out the CNC-milled receiver available from Tactical Innovations, Inc. at www.tacticalinc.com and begin the dream. Available in 6061 for $235 or 7075 for $280. I'm ordering one today...

You're right the gun will shoot alot better than my skills. No doubt.

I've just recently gotten back into target shooting. The rifle was used for shooting prone on a 50 foot indoor range. I used to be able to do hole in hole shots with it. That was 20 years ago.

For my needs, if I can put 5 rounds into a 1 inch group or better at 50 yards, then I'm happy with it. I shoot for fun. I can't afford to get back into competition shooting. Hell... I can't even find any match grade ammo in my area. None of the gun shops have it.

As for the .22lr being the 4 cylinders of the gun world. It works for me. I can afford to shoot it all day long. I also like my Toyota Corolla. Got 40 mpg on my last long trip. ;)

Oh man... I didn't need to see your project there PisnNapalm. I promised myself when I bought my 10/22 that I was going to keep it stock. I doubt I will be able to keep that promise.

Not possible, I'm afraid. I held out for almost a year but eventually broke down and ordered a fancy new barrel, stock, and irons. And am already looking for more ... :uhoh:

When I first shot my then stock 10/22 I knew I had to do some trigger work. I think it had about an 8 pound trigger out of the box. That was unacceptable to me. I tried the "bobby pin" trick but it didn't work. Either I messed it up somehow or used too stiff of a pin.

So then I went for the VQ target hammer and springs. Now I'd estimate the trigger pull to be about 2.5 pound. It breaks clean without being too heavy or light.

The auto bolt release and extended mag release are must haves in my book.

On Monday I'll have lots of time to go shooting. I can't wait!

Gotta love that target with the 'bug juice' splashed on it. Gives new meaning to the term 'flier' when target shooting. ;)

I finally got to the range with the new stock and barrel. When I took my time to line up shots I was doing 1 inch groups at 50 yards. However... Who can shoot a 10/22 and not go rapid with it? :) Just pulling the trigger as fast as I could and line up the shots reasonably well, I put a 25 round magazine into a 3 inch group.

I'm very pleased. I dunno how many rounds I fired today. But it was all fun.

I love this Tapco T6 stock. It's very comfortable and solid. I higly reccomend it for anyone doing a tacticool 10/22 build.
