I'm looking for some advice. I bought an Ar upper on an auction site. It's a fully assembled flat top midlength gas system hb upper. I probably should have bought one from a dealer, but I didn't. My mistake and won't happen again. The brand I bought is not the issue, although I'm sure I'll see the posts about how I should bought a BCM. My issue is it has M4 cuts in the upper with a rifle barrel extension. The rifle functions flawlessly. But it's driving me crazy to see that space between the two and I wouldn't trust my life with it. Dremeling is out of the question. I'm not doing that. I placed the rifle on consignment at a local shop, it's been there for a couple months, no hits. Selling it to a gun shop I'll get $300 at the most. Trading up I'm not sure, if I got $400 and wanted something 800-1000 range. I didn't want to fork out the difference. So now I'm thinking of taking it back from the shop and modding it. I don't have the tools so I would take it to a smith. So figure a $100 for the work. It has a collapsible stock right now. What would you do?

just remove the barrel and put a new barrel in it. sell the old barrel.

If the rifle functions flawlessly, I wouldn't change a thing. But, if it's driving you nut, then, like others have said, change out the barrel.

Yes you should change that.

If you do, Hey, maybe it's just me but it's silly to sell off / change the barrel (a $ 200.00+ part) just change the barrel extension (A $20-30 part).

It should take someone who has the tools about 15-30 minutes at most.

If I recall correctly, the barrel extension is the part that has the feed ramps, not the barrel.

Just sayin;)

You can't change the barrel extension on an AR-15 once it's been installed. It's blind pinned, and can't be removed without drilling the pin out. Even if you could remove it, and even if the headspace matched up, there's no guarantee that the barrel gas port would be centered.

Point being, swapping out the barrel extension is a nonstarter. Either shoot it and enjoy it, or get a new barrel. Or, third option, have a trusted gunsmith cut M4 feed ramps into your existing barrel extension. I wouldn't try that except as a last resort, though.

Get one of the "select" barrels from Ranier Arms. I believe that they go for under $200. They are pretty nice barrels and would be an in expensive fix for your dilema.
