My dads first shot at anything over 100yds.

They block them off due to trash dumping mostly.
That's sort of how it is out here, You have to follow the rules of the hunting area, but as long as you're doing that then you're generally good to go.
A lot of the times when they block off access to places it's because people just use it as a dump site, for both household trash and appliances, as well as carcasses and other biological garbage.

My friend built a 6 br Norma for his dad, pretty amazing to see peoples faces when they hit an apple at 500 yards or a no look 600 gong
Im not 100% sure what were going to go with yet, the 6BR is on the list as is are the CMs.....tho he's possibly just going to kapu my heavy CM for his own use. He also likes ARs so we may got with a heavy AR build....well see what he wants to do lol.
Enjoy that while you can.
I already had my last range time with my Dad.
We built a couple muzzleloaders together.
I would highly recommend spending the time together when you put a rig together for him. It will mean a lot more looking back than if you just put it together and say here it is.
I like the AR build idea because he can do most of the work himself with little assistant beyond some basic instructions. If we build a bolt gun ill have to do most of the work.

We need to work on our shooting bench also lol. The plastic tables convenient but not real stable. I generally shoot prone off a pod, so never really came up with a good solution for a portable bench. Dad says hes fine shooting off the ground, but i doubt he wants to spend long laying in cinder dust or on lava rock lol.

I’ll be 80 next birthday and shooting for 60 years maybe and have never shot at anything past 100 yards either. Simply because for the most part have never lived any where one could. Hunting perhaps on some of the larger fields in Maine but no opportunity ever presented itself. Pushing 40 years membership at a private gun club but, alas,100 yards is the max range.
Sincerely doubt I’d know how.

If you get the chance give it a shot lol.
Dad was never super into shooting, but this seems to have caught his interest. Its a heck of alot fun.

I can agree with that. The biggest thing is being together when you do it.
A three legged folding table with the legs like a tripod will give better stability. Aluminum for the legs would keep it light.
Another option is a thick shooting mat. I've seen some that would double as a mattress.

Those pics are from Hawaii? Transplant some prairie dogs there and it could be Montana or Wyoming.
After the first couple prairie dogs dropped into lava tubes I'm sure they'd know what the cows felt like stepping in their holes

Yes I think I'm funny.....

If I remember correctly the big island of Hawaii has all but one of the climate zones, which one, I don't remember..... Geography course a long time ago and I was only sort of awake for most of it....

Your too kind, amazing is how many people like reading about me getting my butt kicked at a 1000 yards..Lol it has been fun and my pleasure to post it.
The journey to the butt kickings is an interesting qnd educational look over time at what it takes to actually compete at a thousand yards.
I glean useful little tidbits of information that hopefully Ill have the skills and patience to actually put to use at some point.

As long as you continue to post I'll continue to read it!

The tripod tables a good idea, hadnt thought of that yet. The mats are a good idea too, its mostly trying to keep from getting a ton of red cinder dust in the clothes, and in the car when we put stuff away, that prevented me from taking out the mats I have.... There is uncomfortable lava rock in couple of the spots that are actually easier to shoot in because they're in ravines that are too big to be able to lay on also.

I have no experience with lava, cinders, etc.
I'm in red clay country. I couldn't find a rock near my property.
