So my dads been watching YouTube and wanted to try some "long" range shooting.
So i took the day off work, and we packed up my heavy CM, the 7-08 Mesa, and the .280 Ridgeline and headed up to one of the easier places to stretch out a bit.
Heres a view looking down into the bowl we were shooting in. PXL_20210630_211306020.PANO.jpg

And here a picture of the target set up.
The first board is a 230 yd, The second is at 330, and the 8-inch gong is it 430...... Well I lasered the target apart properly I parked a little bit too far away to actually set up right at the 100 yard marks.

The 200-yard target promptly got blown over and we didn't even take a shot at it, the 300-yd target got blown over about 2 minutes later after I put two rounds on it just to confirm my Strelok settings...... Wind was no joke today. It was blowing from our 8 o'clock, anywhere from "well thats annoying" to "wow!" with a couple of gusts that stumbled me and turned little dustdevils loose.
I parked the truck directly behind us to help block some of the wind but it still shook the table pretty good sometimes.

I adjusted all the scopes for drop, and had intended to just have him hold for windage but with bullets going 6 to 8 inches off the right side of the plate, while holding off the left side by a few inches I just put a couple of minutes left in it so i could tell him to aim at the left edge.....then of course the wind would stop and the shot would go way left......
Anyway, for a first time at anything besides plinking he hit probably 60-70% maybe a bit more. I counted 24 (3 are mine) solid hits on plate, still mostly on the right lol. I think he fired 35-40rnds.

Heres his first shot of the day.
I grab some other videos but they're all done with my spotting scope camera and I need to tinker with the runtime and stuff.

Fun day, wish i had better advice to give him......not that hed listen to me....but at least it would beat my "your off right, no aim more left.....way....wait....no other left now....."

Still he was pretty excited, and is talking about his own rig.

Sounds like a heck of a fun day. I’m trying to remember the last time I shot with my dad. I think it was about 1989. He was a hell of a shot. Usually he’d have me walk a milk jug out to 250-300 yards, hit it with his first shot offhand, and say “I’m done!” LOL
Sounds like a real shooter!

Ill admit I took a few pokes at that plate at the end of the day with the 280 (which I shoot pretty well) off hand, and managed to miss every round.

Dad and I used to shoot .22s sometimes when I was in highschool, but he's never really been all that into guns, so this is actually only the 4th or 5th time we've gone shooting in the last 20 years or so....maybe we can make it a more regular thing.

Ill say this, my dad WAS a fantastic shot with an open sighted .22. He took the handle off a 3" valve at something around 300yds by accident because he thought it was an "obnoxious critter" sitting on the pipe right at dusk. Im positive he didn't expect to hit it, but the shot was good,

Having just gotten back from a week at Kona, Hawaii late Sunday night (Sadly, was unable to meet up with Loonwulf due to timing), the altitude they're shooting at and the constant trade winds up there are no joke. That was good shooting to hit in that crosswind for sure .

It was 85 deg on the coastline every day, but in the 50's up on the slopes of the volcanoes where they were shooting. Mauna Loa/Mauna Kea run roughly 13,500+ at their summits, based on the down vest and long sleeves you dad had on were you guys about 8,000 feet up that day?

Stay safe.

That looks like a lot of fun!
It was! Most of the time Im up there plinking by myself, so getting to just sit and watch for a while was kinda nice.

Yeah, it was a bummer stuff didn't line up...bum by we go make em work!
Google earth says were were at almost exactly 9000' where we were parked.

Must be fun to shoot in a remote area there.

And if that's in Hawaii, at that altitude it appears to be a "Dry Heat" !
Yup, Maunakea.....bout 1/4 Mile from the ...uh....observatory visitors center? gift shop?....thingy.....But yeah its one of the easier places to get to for shooting outside of 100yds. Backing up and moving the target out of the little ravine you can get back to 700ish there. I thought it was kinda hot except for the wind keeping me cool id have been grumpy....got sunburned tho, surprise, surprise......

Great job for a first timer, Is that a NF SHV scope ?
Nah Sightron S-tac 3-16x42. Id LIKE to have a SHV, and I may get one eventually, but the weights been putting me off....I wish they offered the 4-14 in a 42 or 50mm SFP option.....

I'm glad you are able to spend time with your dad. My dad and I competed all over the midwest trapshooting. Those were some great days!
You guys need to get him a rifle built and make shooting and reloading regular thing.

Ps I still can't believe that there is that much undeveloped country in Hawaii. Your pictures look like Montana.

That’s really cool Loon congrats to your dad. Isn’t it amazing how modern rifles and optics allow for first timers to make those long range shots? I took a guy out the other day who was basically a rifle virgin and within an hour had him plinking steel at 600 yards almost every pull of the trigger. Teach the basics, dial it in and supply the ammo.

I love the big island, it reminds me in many ways of growing up in New Mexico. The terrain can be almost identical in areas. The attitude and the “feel” of the people are very similar. I am right at home on the big island. One of my buddies lives in Waimea, and he manages Big Island divers down in Kona.

If you go on Hawaii fish and game or dec whatever they call it there's a great map of the big island that shows public land. It's most of the island which surprised me.

Hes got no interest in reloading, but hell shoot up all my ammo and is willing to pay for components, so I guess that works out.
We went over stock designs with some of my other rifles and so far he still really LIKES the feel of that Archangel stock....which I admit is an awfully comfy and solid stock for the 150 bucks it cost.
Gonna borrow a chassis gun from my buddy Dell hopefully and see how he likes that...Ive got basic examples off all the other designs, and so far the tactical gooseneck is the winner...

yup a fair portion of the island IS accessible for hunting/shooting/hiking, but access can be difficult lol.
Where I want to go next time Is farther in (gives me an excuse to try knock down a sheep on the way in) but is a lot more comfortable to shoot, and the ranges that we can get out to are significantly longer.

Yeah I've been continually impressed with how much help modern technology is.... I actually got my first rangefinder only about 5 years ago. Add in the ballistic apps and all those fun things and what felt like a real stretch is beginning to feel confidently doable...
I took two shots at 330 yd check the dope on the Creedmoor adjusted for 430 according to what Strelok was saying And let him go to town...... It probably would have taken me half that bag of bullets to actually hit the target at 400 yards not that long ago.

I used to get my air tanks filled the big island divers sometimes, for paintball not diving, Good bunch folks in there.... Haven't been in in 15 years or so.

That is awesome you 2 got to spend some good time together. Im trying to find areas in my neck of the woods to stretch out some. Found one place i can get out to 200 yards. 250 if i want to take a chance that an atv wont approach from behind where the target will sit. Im not willing to risk that. The 200 yard area has a coal bank behind it. But ill have to set up on a popular haul road. And would have to be worried about dust from atvs and trucks going by. I'll figure out something yet. I had another area. But they blocked the trails with huge rocks.

Sounds like you had great day. How far where you from Pokahokulo base?
Only a few miles from the base proper, But the training area encompasses portions of the base of Mauna kea all the way over to Mauna loa, So we were actually only about a mile uphill from there.

We're lucky to have so much space available to us here. Granted you pretty much have to have a four-wheel drive to get anywhere besides our one sanctioned range that only goes to a hundred yards, But there are places to go at least.

The pu'u (cinder cone crater) we were shooting in is one of the common places for people to go to shoot, But just over to the other side of the pu'u Is a spot that a lot of people park their trucks to either hike or hunt out towards the state park. So every time we go in there we have to stop and check to make sure nobody's out there.
