My daughter's essay (you will like it)

I only let her be herself and help her out in that. Kala is a good kid, never in trouble, loves to hunt and shoot, and still plays Modern Warfare 3 without being corrupted. I have three kids and love them all. I will die for any of them, but the good Lord better help the first one to mess with my oldest. Mess with her and I'll destroy the pieces she leaves behind.

Here you go. From this weekend:

With an evil assault rifle, my newest in .308.

With her own .223 Axis. I wish I had gotten a video of her working the bolt. Faster than most right handers especially with her .22.

My other daughter with her personal "assault rifle" and a "high capacity" magazine. Ignore the Marines behind, they just got spanked on a clay pigeon drill.

That is absolutely awesome that she wrote that. I couldn't have enjoyed reading anything more. I feel much better than I had been.

Yes..please let us know the reaction of the class and the teacher.
Thanks..
jd
Teacher took it up to someone in the school office. It got approved as it was a valid essay with no threats despite including words like shoot and gun. So we are waiting on the grade. But she once again brought home a straight "A" report card this week so...

Awesome! There is hope for the future.

This
"Shoot my bow"

"Huh?"

"And I want to kill a coyote this year with it!"

"I need to talk to your dad"

"Why? You want to go too?"

Just made me LOL. Looks like you got a great kid, and are doing well in the parenting department.

:)

She got a 100%. I got to talk to the teacher over it and found that she liked it, but was a bit worried that it could cause her problems with the school. Turns out it was well received even by those who disagreed with it. I guess there is hope after all.

My daughter just wrote a similar essay and because it is a college class, I have no recourse.

She was given a failing grade on the paper. The teacher said There is no way I am going to pass someone who things guns are a good thing.... or something to that effect.

Bingo.

Essays are to be graded on the merits of the topic and writing skills. If the topic is a valid one, and the writing skills demonstrated are commensurate with the skills expected, then the grade should be a passing one. And a high-passing one if the skills demonstrated warrant that.

There is recourse. And if it takes an attorney to spell that out to the college, then do it. I would absolutely refuse to pay tuition to a college that isn't going to uphold the educational standards they profess to teach.

:)

Mcdonl, your daughter's college should have an Ombudsman, or she should take it to the Dean, Department Chair, Chancellor or whoever appropriate that would be responsible for enforcing "Professional Responsibility"--might also be prudent to get a lawyer involved too, and try to get this one out to both the NRA AND the ACLU since it's a "Free Speech" issue too.

Line up as many possible cards to play as you can... you get no help from 100% of those who you don't ask for it, right?

I agree, but the burden my advocacy has added to my already over stretched life would not be worth it in my opinion.

It is an AP class, as part of her HS honors program. She will be writing a new paper, probably proliferation of liberal bias in education. Let's see that that gets her. :)

I am also an adjuct professor at this college so I cannot afford to pee where I eat. I have already taken a lot of heat because of the things I have said, and done as a part of our national and state battle to keep our rights.

It is easy for me to say you should fight it, but that is arm chair QB'ing. Just know that what they did was wrong by any measure, and my daughter is spitting mad that a school would do such a thing.

Then go above her head.

It doesn't have to come to a lawsuit, but any teacher that grades on personal bias instead of the merit of the topic and material needs to be taken to task for it.

There are some things that I read that just make life better. That essay is going on that list for sure. I do agree that adding a quote from a founder would have added to the essay's impact on the class and possibly continued the discussion for the kids when they got home. "Dad (or mom, hopefully both) did you know that Thomas Jefferson said "No man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. If he said that, why are they trying to take our guns?" And the discussion opens.

But I for sure do not want to detract ANYTHING from her. She did an absolutely amazing job. I would say she has you to thank. And to an extent she absolutely does. You showed her the path and guided her. But now she is 14 I believe? Now she is starting to think for herself. She's standing on her own beliefs and principals. And she showed great courage in writing that essay. She didn't have a fear of "peeing where she eats". Very, very admirable.

We have high hopes for this young lady. Something tells me that we won't be disappointed.

Carry on....

I hear you. It's hard to apply much pressure when it may affect your bread and butter. I leave that up to you. Perhaps, in the end, it won't affect the ultimate outcome with respect to her long range educational and professional goals.

But woe unto any teacher who would pull that on any of my children. I have no such bumps in my path. Being a retired, 20 year Navy veteran who also has a job outside any such teaching facility gives me quite a bit of financial and professional buffer. I wasn't known for taking anal excrement while I was in the Navy, and I'm not known for it afterwards, either.

Thanks. She didn't get her brains from me. I ain't her father, just her Dad. I just let her go and see where she runs (within certain bounds of course). She has locked in her courses through high school in a way that puts her into a good school. Too bad she plans to be a Marine for some reason. Maybe an officer?

Her sister and her a plan to both be in the Corps. My oldest wants combat photography, and the younger S/S (0317). The joke is that Kala will take before and after pistures of her sister's work. I am sure that will change in time though.

Very nice work! My daughter is a college junior and doing a paper on the evils of gun control. She told me she needed a picture of her shooting her pink Walt her and my AR! I love that kid! You should be very proud of any young person today that takes the attitude she has! Keep up the good work!

gdcpony, wish I could figure out how to motive my kids as you do yours. great job.

mcdonl, I understand the not peeing where you sit thing, but can't your daughter raise it up through the ranks? That sort of behavior and belief can not be left to stand, that's exactly why we are were we find ourselves now as a nation, with so many fighting to deny us our 2nd amendment rights.
