She was a Soviet 1939 Izhevsk made M1891/30 Mosin Nagant. More then likely captured in the Winter War but possibly captured in the Continuation War or given to Finland by the Germans after the start of Operation Barbarossa. At some point in the Continuation War these rifles were stripped down and reissued to Finnish Troops. Mostly they went to Artillery and Communication troops since they ran around with non standard rifles like Carcano Carbines.

She has a two piece spliced Finn Stock, Finn front "double stack" front sight, Finn sling attachment points, a Chatellerault made Bolt body, early M91 Izhevsk made Bolt handle, Tula made mag/trigger guard, and the standard Finn markings. [SA] is stamped on the left side of the barrel collar and the left side of the receiver has a Finn serial number. The top of the barrel collar has the Finn "D" marking referencing that it's a .310 diameter bore for Soviet ammo. Also the rifle has been counter bored, which was commonly done by the Finns to improve accuracy from these old rifles.

Oh, the trigger is AWESOME! Another Finn improvement.

The sling looks to be from a Hungarian AK.

Except it's riveted to the rear sling point and is of much better quality. The sling has no marking what so ever.

Are you sure that's a spliced stock? It looks soviet.

Those are great rifles. They're often mistaken for Soviet 91/30's and priced accordingly, but they are superior shooters. If the Finns kept the Soviet barrel it's because the barrel passed their muster.

I've heard this kind of rifle called an M-30 to distinguish it. There's a gradation of them from simply stamped SA rifles to full reworks with a Tikka barrel and pot-belly stock.

The Soviets also slice repaired busted stocks, though most were replaced post war during refurb.
That is a Soviet Front and rear , for sure, as the Finns would have "Pot bellied" the front end of th eusable "rear" (spliced at the rear hand guard retainer area,) and they would have center'd the stocks crossbolt in the rear of the finger grooves of the forestock, that being to the rear of where the Finns made such splices
Finn spliced stocks to save wood and keep warpage away. They did so on all domesticly made stocks and on rebuilds, but the M-27, M28, M-28/30's, and the M-39's are all standrd with spliced stocks.

The Finns would have used their 'type' of finger joints on the splice, with 'rounded' tips (post war splices are squared) the Soviets would have their own pattern as well, a very sharp pointed end at each joint..... I dont have pictures at hand, but somewhere they are visibly different, depending on who did the stock repair.

Regardless, a most excellent weapon!

Yes :D
I have a 39 Izvehsks in a potbelly stock, 2 issue Soviet stocks with SA's and one Tikka barreld in a Finn repaired Soviet stock, that are 6 small patches on the wood, scatterd over its length.
As well,I have a Soviet spliced 91/30 (refurb)
I'm thinkiing they used what worked, at hand.

Nice Mosin-Nagant. My wife is an LPN and I showed here the picture along with the couple of posts asking whether you were an RN and the first thing she said was, "what's between his feet?":)

What I like the most of the Finn captures is that there is no pattern of them. The Finns needed guns asap and got them working.

Some are simply captured Soviet rifle with a Finn Army stamp to complete rebuild with an unlimited amount of variations in between due to time and parts on hand. It shows the level that Finland was at to keep her independence from both Nazi Germany and the USSR.

My Finn friends,Miami JBT.

M-39's, Captured and SA'd M-38's andM-44's, 3 'as captured' SA'd 91/30's, much like yours, as well as a Pot belly'd m91/30', M91's (both are '41 tikkas) a captured SVT-40, a Dragoon, and some 3 refurb'd Soviet 91/30's...... one a 1930 manufactured, one a 41 Tula but one is a "re-capture" that is 'SA' swak'd but Soviet arsenal refurrbed and sold with recent imports, shellack and all

They were being cleaned, cosmo'd and boxed to store with my M-91's, M-24's, M27's and M-28, M-28/30's.
All have "SA" or "D" and most have both, most are in in Finn stocks, but, alas, some that were "improved" by those who know no better, with other stocks, some missing small parts, though none are chopped, but they are all well worth haveing. The One in the picture that is an odd ball (unFinn)'Sporter' is a matching Remington with a shiney barrell and US Ord bombs, a 500$ rifle made into a 50$ rifle with an hour and a hacksaw. Still, its in a nice Walnut stock, although short, and shoots awsome, so Idonno.....The stocks are commin off the sporters and Ill see what comes my way in parts, but the rest are upstairs.

I have fairly small house, lotsa kids, winters commin, so were takein' out and puttin' away 'stuffs'.
The ones I alrady have in storage I aquired mostly in the 90's back when there wasnt an M-44 in sight and Finn M24s were 3 for 100$ or 5 with cracked stocks, with 4 of 5 having no cracks.......cant wait for all the kids to move on out :D

Mosins have come along way, and hopefully well have quite a few more years to gather them up :D
