This one's been sitting for 4-5 years about 12" wide. I split it down the middle which was a pain, brain turned about 90° in 3'. Just fit on the band saw but it didn't like it, so I may try ripping the boards I want with the Circle saw and a straight board to keep thing flat. Trying to make some 1"x4" core a fishing rod guide wrapper in making. I've got a 1' chunk I can make into 1" x1" or 2" x2"

Grain was looking good on the off cuts I got so far.
Would love to get some 2x2 s.

I have always had hobbies that paid for themselves or funded other hobbies. Woodturning is one of them. I started back in December and basically thought myself how to turn bowls. Been having a lot of fun making and selling bowls.

Making wooden bullets is just going to be for fun, not sure I could sell enough to make money on them.
I might try and make another one today.
Those look amazing, Gunny!

I’ve made a couple of whiskey barrel cups that I gave to friends that like to drink.

One is a big bourbon drinker, he said that the barrel gives the bourbon a smoother taste.

Now you may have hit on something there Gunny, I'd be willing to give that a try if you make any more and want to sell a few to an old Army Paratrooper. Makes sense that it might add some quick flavor to mid-to-low shelf bourbons.

My wife got me those bullets above because I have a friend who distills his own and does a surprisingly good job of doing-so. He gives me four guarts of various batches each Christmas. 1 aged sour mash bourbon (he uses casks he buys from a distillery in Tennessee) and one aged rye and then he gives me a fresh jar of each that aren't quite ripe yet. So my wife bought me those wooden bullets to drop in the unripened jars. She actually bought me four packs ($100 total I am not kidding) and I've already got a few jars with wooden bullets soaking.

The writing on the boxes is in Hebrew, you have over 300 rounds of Israeli training blanks.
And the guy that I got them from said they were Egyptian, I just never looked them up. If I remember right, I bought almost 400 rounds for $35. I only bought it for the brass, it’s boxer primed. Thanks for the info.

Those are cool looking. They are most likely having them made on a CNC machine.
I keep you in mind when I make some more barrels. I’ve been trying to get more large salad bowls made for an up coming craft show, but it seems like every time I get one made, it sells within a day or two.

Love the bowls, Gunny!
I, too, am a woodturner when I have the time and material. Am in the process of turning a couple of replacement stair rail spindles for my brother's house again. Seems grandkids are hard on those things.

I love turning bowls, too, but my wife seems to give them away to family and friends for me...:scrutiny:

Nice convenient sizes to turn without having to get the smaller too out and need supports and the like.
There's a number of historic 37mm rounds that at stumpy, too--just less nice for turning out a 2x2 blanks.
The 37x85 Hotchkiss would be an interesting one to turn.

Now, a person who could whittle up wooden replica of the rounds used in the Mountain Howitzers would likely find a market for those replica with the collectors of those guns. Maybe. Perhaps.

Well, I grabbed a small piece of Hickory and mounted it on the lathe. I didn’t measure anything just cut away until I had something I liked.

Here it is next to the first one. I think after a few more practice runs they will get pretty easy to turn. Then I’ll try some closer to actual size. I might go ahead and buy a set of mini carbide tools.

Gunny, you will receive a long triangular package from me in a coupla' days. In it you will find a piece of scrap lumber for your collections. If you have a blowtorch, chainsaw, glue, and an axe you will probably be able to sculpt it into a wooden bowl for me, but since you are now into wooden ammo... I would greatly appreciate it if you would sculpt from it for me a 50 BMG round.. Please trade me even up for my piece of wood.
You might even be able to fashion a set of wood grips for a 45 from it.
You should get it on Thursday.

Thanks Dick. I was already thinking about trying to make one the size of a 50 cal. and send to you. But I still need a little more practice.
Wooden bullets look good in a wooden bowl.

The nerve damage in my shoulders has made it uncomfortable to tie a lot so, I don’t tie as much anymore.
Hell, just stay safe and enjoy. The bracelets were pretty cool. One of the girls at my Harley dealership has a husband who makes cool key ring lanyards using beads which duplicate the Vietnam service ribbon colors. She gave me one and they are also pretty cool. Take care and of course Semper Fi. :)
