My first wooden cartridge.

Today is the first day in a week that I’ve turned something on my wood lathe. I didn’t have time to turn a bowl, still working on gun stocks so, I turned a cartridge.
This topic will show you what I’ve been doing all week.

Today I took a little break from stock work and grabbed a pice of wood from a bag of cutoffs that I bought a few months ago. I’m not sure what type of wood it is but it turned very nicely.

It took about 30 minutes from start to finish. I didn’t measure anything, just turned it with an image in my head. I’ve been thinking about making some larger ones like 50 cal or larger, but I need to order some wood spindle blanks to do that.
It was a fun little project.
What no .45 GAP? JK. Very cool Gunny.

Wonder if you can make a cutout of the shape you want from steel, that way you can make a bunch of the same thing quick. Kinda like how the make custom trim cutters but the wood spins and not the cutter.

We have a wood lathe but I haven't used it much any small project I just used the metal lathe. I'd like to make some nice baseball bats some day tho.

You have everything you need to turn pens and really anything. Most of what I turn is between centers on the big lathe or on a mandrel on the small lathe, mainly pens and Christmas ornaments, snowmen, and light pulls. Here are a few ideas if you want to try something different.

There are some bullet pens made from fired brass with real bullets, deer antler, walnut from a gun stock, resin I colored and made into service ribbons, arrows from hunts, letter openers from successful hunt brass, rattle snake skin from one that got too close with an attitude, and pretty much your imagination is your limit 04D98A08-E667-4791-9ED7-3592E4E1D1AD.jpeg

As another idea for you, these are usually quick and simple, and sell pretty well if you are in a better market than I am. Key chains, ceiling fan pulls, lamp pulls, necklaces, pendants, etc. 1F39B04C-C70D-4321-8903-DC8FD2FCB49F.jpeg

Don’t have any 50 cal pens, bottle openers, or pulls left to get any pics of, and haven’t made any wooden bullets like yours in years, but they looked almost as good as yours. I made chess sets with wooden bullets for the pieces out of black walnut and maple, Purple Heart and yellow heart, and Blackwood and holly a few years ago that were a big hit, but I haven’t been in my shop the last couple years due to health problems and may not get back to it. Just throwing out some more ideas to add to your already impressive skill set.

Very attractive work on the bullet, bowls and cups!

I had some military ammo when I had Swedish Mausers that had wood bullets as practice rounds, but just the projectile was wood.

A lot of guard cartridges were loaded with wooden bullets. For sure some Italian cartridges.

When I was a kid I joined the Naval Cadets, 1948 +/- 2 years. The kid-sized drill rifles had wooden cartridges affixed to the bolt. Don't know if they were turned and glued to the bolt, or were part of the bolt machining. I loved watching the cartridge feed into the "chamber" and the pretend BANG when I fired it.

You can still buy drill rifles, but this thread brought back the memory of "mine."

I like the barrel-shaped cups. A friend of mine made a set of salt and pepper shakers for me, but I don't know where they disappeared to.

Well, the main thing that I turn are bowls. I just gave this one to an old friend.

The reason I started turning bullets was to work on my spindle turning skills. I normally turn 4 to 5 bowls a week and will start turning a few bullets a week also.
My daughter keeps trying to get me to start a webpage to sell my bowls, but I just tell her that this is just a hobby to keep me busy. I don’t want to start a small business and turn my hobby into work because, it would loose all the fun.
I’m going to practice some more and fill that bowl with bullets.

You could turn grenades to put on book ends as well.
If you were to put up a website to sell bowls just list them as you make them with buyers able to buy. No email or such to keep buyers from asking for custom things. Just an outlet for selling your one off creative products. A lot of painters do this type of marketing. Leave the sold ones up for a while with a big "sold" and bump one off when new ones are done. This way no pressure or stress. There are truely no limits to the projects one gets into when retired it seems.

That's a very nice bowl, a finish with aqua fortis would look great.

Gunny, you will receive a long triangular package from me in a coupla' days. In it you will find a piece of scrap lumber for your collections. If you have a blowtorch, chainsaw, glue, and an axe you will probably be able to sculpt it into a wooden bowl for me, but since you are now into wooden ammo... I would greatly appreciate it if you would sculpt from it for me a 50 BMG round.. Please trade me even up for my piece of wood.
You might even be able to fashion a set of wood grips for a 45 from it.
You should get it on Thursday.
It arrived today.
Dick, that’s an old/new Bishop Mauser target stock. It would be a shame to cut it up.

I have no male heir, only a daughter who lives in a "New York" type anti gun place. I gave the 06' to my step grandson who promises not to ever sell it. It belonged to my father I turned 78 yesterday and will be lucky to get one more year above ground. I plan to give away a few of my guns in my will. My wife can sell the remainder of them.
The stock was acquired about 20 years ago and will probably be used as firewood by my wife after I'm gone. Your collection of wood will find a place for it. I was just kidding about the chain saw. :)

Happy belated Birthday. I’ve been under the weather the last couple of days, but will try and get you that 50 cal bullet as soon as possible.

View attachment 1019272 Gunny I didn't realize there were fellow turners on this site.

I've turned a couple of cartridges but bowls/plates/vases are what I mainly do.

Nice looking boolit.

Those are nice looking. I’ve turned over 100 bowls so far and only have two that I’ve kept for myself.
Last month I made just over $900 selling bowls and used the money to pay for all of my grandson’s back to school and football stuff. Any money I make this month will good to buying more tools and wood.
I need to place an order for some spindle stock for making bullets and honey dippers.
