My Friends Found a Rifle in the Woods

Take it to the police. If it's stolen, you don't want to have it around anyway. If it's not stolen, and they can't find the original owner (which is likely), you can probably have it returned to you in a couple months.

It's probably just junk that somebody threw away, and maybe some kids found it and played with it until they realized it didn't work, and left it under the bridge. Or it could have been stolen and/or used in a crime. Better safe than sorry, take it to the police.

Look at the thing. If he turns it in they'll NEVER figure out if it was used in a crime. In fact they probably won't even try.

I uncovered a serial and the model. It is a Glenfield model 60, from Marlin.
Too bad. That's a nice little rifle.
Nice pic. You did a good job cleaning it up. :)

...then (and only then) take it to a buy-back. Neat, clean, legal, and you still get some of your hard-earned tax dollars back.

I thought a lot of gun buybacks were "no questions asked."

If so, just do that.

It's the most common .22 rifle in the world. It's a plinker, with an old scope on it. It's HIGHLY unlikely it was used in a crime, other than maybe shooting rabbits out of season. No bullet could be matched to the bore any more, and any trial for any crime would be long over by now.

Even if it was stolen, it's of no use to its original owner now, if he can be found, and the police are unlikely to look. Looks like it's been there for a long, long time.

POLICE!

Worth next to nothing to you. Possibly helpful to them.

Maybe "just lost". But people don't typically toss a firearm, even a cheapo, without a reason.

I have a marlin model 60 and I think my freind has the same model you have his is a model 60 but its older then mine dose it have a squirrle carved on the stock?

If dose its a nice gun and I would sell it or keep what are the cops going to do?

What is the argument AGAINST the buy-back option??

So it was used in a crime... so what? The authorities now have it, and can investigate it up the ying-yang. You've got photos, posts, and enough witness testimony as evidence that you're safe... right? So what is the worst thing about cleaning it up for the cops and selling it to them??

No really, what's so bad about that?

If you hand it over for no money, are the cops really going to clean it up just to begin investigating it's history? Maybe, maybe not.

Do the right thing, clean'er up and sell it to the good guys.

I say take it to the police, but not because it has any bad ramifications for you if you don't. Take it because if it was stolen, the owner might at least have the piece of mind that it's found. You'd want that if it was your gun??

You can do whatever you want with it, but I know I'd take it to the gun buy back here, get my $100 Walmart gift card, go to Walmart and buy a brand new marlin 60.

I live in a semi-rural area. With the number of guns in my county, the likeliness that it was used in a crime is that of winning the lottery. YMMV

police for sure. Next time. Well like there is going to be a next time. If you or your freinds ever happen to find a gun. Dont touch it. Call the police, wait for them to get there. they will want to see where it is. how it is lying. This may help them solving a crime. When you call them now it will be very hard to do this. DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE POLICE. FIRST call them. no police agencey wants someone walking in with any kind of firearm. Unless they are aware of it. Pick up the phone tell them what happened. Ask them if they want you to take it to them or if they want to pick it up.

Dude, this is a department store .22 rifle with a cheap scope on it, apparently lost many years ago, not a 9mm ditched under a bridge recently.

Crime gun? Not likely.

I mean, I hate to burst anyone's bubble here, but I doubt there's anything crime-novel-worthy about this old rusty plinker.:)

Jeez, you guys act like every single gun that ever found was used in a crime. I suppose every abandoned car was involved in a hit-and-run?

Hunters lose guns ALL THE TIME.

I can't even believe one guy chimed in here with "A .22 is the choice of many assassins." Some of you are starting to sound like the antis.

It's an old, rusted out hunk of junk that has clearly been sitting for a while. The best thing for the OP is to turn it into a gun buy-back program and use the money to buy a new gun.

Yeah, a silenced .22 might be an assassin's choice for intimate work, but not this gun.

Dont touch it. Call the police, wait for them to get there. they will want to see where it is. how it is lying.

I can't imagine that the CSI New York squad is going to come out, cordon off the area, running police barrier tape, taking photos, dusting for prints and fibers for this ole hunka junk.
If the authorities need to look into this rusted-out peashooter, they can pay for it. They'll get it nicely cleaned up, and if it has been in any crime, happily give them all the information they need; location, time of day, phase of the moon, how it is lying, etc.

LOL - A Marlin Model 60A.

The first gun my dad bought me was a Marlin Model 60A when I was 14 years old. The thing was not very reliable but I put a lot of rounds through it when I was a kid. I still own it though it is no longer operable because of broken internals.

take it to the cops and the first thing they will probably do is arrest your friends that gave it to you.

when they (the cops) clean it up and find out is was stolden, your friends and you could be in for some very expensive attorney fees. receiving stolen property ect.. just toss it back under the bridge and forget it... just hypothetical, but i don't trust cops like i did 50-40-30-20 or even 10 yrs ago..

I would want to know!

Honestly, that is probably the best reason for turning it in to the police. If it was stolen (unlikely, I know), I'm sure the owner would want to know what became of it, even if it is a turd. Who knows, could be a turd with sentimental value.

It's the gun that killed Kennedy - I recognize it from my undercover visit to the Bilderbergs. You take it to the cops and the MiB'll get ya!

I was going to respond with the whole 'quote-box', thing and do a line-by-line retort of one post above, but what's the use?

I just keep shaking my head.

I can't believe there are people who believe such things.

Blinking... as I just keep shaking my head.

Take it to the police to insure that it was not reported stolen. If it was, you don't want to be found with it in your possession, and you want the owner to have it back. If used in a crime such as damage to property, it might help solve the case.

If it's not contraband, you should get it back eventually and won't have to worry about a knock on the door and concern that you made up the story under questioning. Do the buy-back or sell/trade at a gun show.

Guns aren't normally just pitched or lost. There is probably a story behind it that I would want to know.

now the question is, what were YOUR friends doing in the woods under a bridge?

Hunting trolls?

Looking at the first pics, even under all that gunk that sucker just screamed "Marlin"!

Yes it does.

Bridge Hunting, actually. They spend lots of time trapsing the country side in search of old iron bridges/covered bridges. It's a hobby.
