My journey to a truly great 9mm...

CZ PCR. Since you said you are in line to inherit a BHP, I suggest you get the CZ. I have both the PCR and a BHP. Love them both!!

CZ 75 (You can always get a trigger job)
BHP (limits you to C&L, trigger also needs trigger job if new)
Beretta 92 (if you have big hands and like big grips)

I would also suggest a 1911 in 9mm....but they are usually $700 and up.

CZ's are very popular on this forum. I have a new CZ75. It fits my hand better than any semi-auto I've ever held. Keep in mind that the reach to the double action trigger is pretty long--I have medium size hands. Not much, but I've fired 150 FMJ and 150 JHP (Speer +P 124 gr. JHP) with no malfunctions. Not sure but the trigger reach should be shorter on a
single action only CZ75.

I've owned a Ruger P-95. Great gun! If I had it to do over I think I'd go with the P-89 because it weighs more and might be easier to shoot. I've fired a Beretta 92 which is similar to the Taurus 92. I like the CZ75 better. I've never fired a Sig 226, but it may be the best choice on your list. Most are pretty accurate and reliable. Just make sure it feels good in your hand.

Held some different CZs earlier, not sure if they are the gun for my hand. Didn't feel right to me. They're still in the back of my head, but I'm seeking out other firearms now. CDNN has a great deal on Sigs. $390 for a two tone Sig P226, and $400 for a new Sig Pro. $300 for a Walther P990. These all feel great in my hand and point well. any ideas on which will fit my needs/wants the best?
Thanks

How about a used Sig 228? If you can find a 226 in the price range you are looking for then a 228 should be able to be found as well I would think.

I love my 228!! :p

I normally don't recommend rubber grips of any kind for any reason but a pair of Hogue rubber panels on a CZ-75 feels better to the hand than ANYTHING I have ever picked up. Amazing really, they just feel great.

Look at the Springfield XD line... I've shot the .40S&W, it fit great in my hand and I shot it much better than I shoot any Glock.

Shot an XD for the first time yesterday. :barf:

No malfunctions. Couldn't hit squat with it. Felt very top heavy.

Guess I'm a 1911 man through and through.

Ain't gonna be an easy road with those numbers...

I couldn't disagree more.Including used guns,a man could make a fabulous collection of nothing but sub$400 9mm's,many of them just as well if not better built,as or more reliable and accurate as new guns costing 2 or 3 times as much.

My choice in a $400 or less 9mm would be a Ruger P-89 or P-95. It took me a while to warm up to Ruger semiautos, but I've come to appreciate them. They are rugged, reliable, and very reasonably priced. In my experience they offer good practical accuracy. My HD gun is a Ruger P90 .45 ACP, which is the softest shooting .45 I've ever fired, and is very accurate to boot.

The CZ 75B is an excellent nine whose very reasonable price makes it even better. It meets all of your criteria: accurate, reliable, superb ergos, and it ain't a Glock. The CZ also offers much classier visuals than a Walther, XD, Sigma, HK, or other plastic nine. Depending on where you live, you should be able to find a 75B right at the $400 mark. New ones come with two full-capacity magazines, 15 rounders. (Ignore the outdated contrary info on the CZ website.)

The only justified complaint I've encountered with the 75B is trigger pull. The DA pull is rough, but to me that's irrelevant -- I keep the pistol cocked and locked whenever it's loaded. However, the SA trigger is a little creepy. Useable, but creepy.

Note that CZ also makes an SA only variant of the 75B,

which I believe features an adjustable trigger. Many shooters say these models eliminate the trigger creep of the standard 75B, and swear by them. If I buy another 75B (entirely possible), I will choose an SA-only version.

Not likely...

S&W 5903 or 5906 Ex-Cop Trade-ins

I recommend a police trade-in S&W 5903 or 5906.

My wife got a near mint, ex-cop 5903 for $348 at a gun show a little over a year ago. In over 3000 rounds, there hasn't been a single issue with it and it is one of the most accurate handguns I've ever shot.....well....semi auto. I'd highly recommend a police trade-in 5903 or 5906, if you can look it over before you purchase it. I've seen a very small few that looked like brand new (like my wife's), and others look like they've been dragged down the road behind the patrol car. For the money, these are some of the best 9mm bargins you can find.

BTW - We've shot everything WWB to el cheapo, steel-cased Brown Bear and FMJ to Black Talon HPs without any firearm issues. It will eat anything you give it.

Sig P239 - IMO, very accurate and easily carried.
HK USP9C or S&W3913 are other choices.

Well folks, this is my first post here, I got turned on to THR when I started looking at other forums for some info on my latest purchase.

Now that the intro's over, on to the topic:

I was on the same quest as the thread starter and wound up getting a used Taurus PT99AF. Less than $300 with one 15rd mag, a Galco holster, and 3 boxes of Fiocci FMJ's. Including tax, out the door at a gunshop.

I wanted a full size 9 for paper and steel shooting that'd cost less to shoot than my beloved 1911's.

I went to the range yesterday and shot Remington UMC JHP's (@75 rds), 150 or so rounds of Fiocci 115FMJ's and 100 WWB FMJ's. NO malfunctions at all.
Pistol shot fist sized groups at 7 yards with all the ammo. Unfortunately for me, that accuracy anectdote says more about my pistol shooting than about the gun. I bought the 99 to shoot pistol more, and get better, because I suck with a pistol. I'm sure IT could do better, but I was at an indoor range and to shoot rested on the half-door on the lane would have put shots in the ceiling, not the trap........

I really prefer the Taurus' frame mounted safety than the Beretta's slide mount device. I was ready to go above my current budget and try a 92Vertec until I had one in my hands and tried to use the safety. Trust me, if you like a 1911's safety, you won't like the beretta's.

I'm ecstatic about my new to this 45 fan's 9mm, and I think the PT99 points very naturally and I have small hands. Its a big pistol, but lightish having an aluminum frame. I know the locking block will need an eye kept on it, but that's no biggie.

I wanted to try a CZ75, but noone around here had one I could put my mitts on before I found the 9 I bought.

Sorry, that was long winded of me.

I have been really impressed with the accuracy and ergos of the XD-9 that I got about 6 months ago. It is not only accurate but easy to be accurate with. As much as I love my Berettas, they are not as accurate as my XD-9.

The XD-9 is the ONLY platic pistol that I own so that should say something for it. It is better is most ways than the Glock. I like the Glock grip angle but that is about it.

Decided on a CZ P-01. Felt great while shooting, very accurate. Thanks a lot guys.

Thanks! Can't wait to get her to the range... Thanks for the link, looks like a ton of info.
