Hey everybody,
In my eternal search for new guns I've come wanting a good 9mm for quite some time. I've done plenty of research and such but can't decide on which model. It will never be used for concealed carry, size is not an issue. Will be a range plinker and target gun. I will also use it as a home defense piece. So, specific requirments are as follows:

1) Reliable (of course)- this will be used as home defense.

2) Accurate- Want to be able to hit a coke can at 25-30 yds. (hope this type of pistol is capable!)

3) Good ergonomics- want to set and feel good

4) Inexpensive- Want to keep it 350-400 (new or used)

5) No Glocks (don't feel good in my hand), only 9mm

Just the simple basics. Could fudge on the price a little if need be. I've looked seriously at these, can anyone compare them for my needs? Maybe recommend some more?

-Walther p990
-Taurus 24/7
-Taurus pt92/99
-Ruger p95
-Beretta 96d Centurion
-SW Sigma
-Sig p226 from CDNN, or a used Sig Pro

Comments/Suggestions?

Look at the Springfield XD line... I've shot the .40S&W, it fit great in my hand and I shot it much better than I shoot any Glock.

Thanks for the quick replies. My grandmother owns a BHP, bought new in '80, shot one magazine and now resides in pristine condition in it's original box. It's, of course, always enamored me. Someday I'll inherit it, but right now the funds are low, gotta keep it around $400.

I'll take a look at the Springfield. Trusted company.

Oh Yes You Can

$400 huh?? OK THEN...

CDNN Hi Power for $399.00 brand new.

You can have your cake and eat it too.:)

What 9mm

The Berretta is probably one of the biggest stars in your list. And in the gun store last week someone summed it up well. Those Berrettas are good guns, others are nice, but that's like driving a Cadillac instead of plain 'ol Chevy. The Taurus 92 is a copy of the same and may be more inline with your budget. I have a PT145 Millenium pro (.45acp) and just bought my wife a PT111 (9mm). Having these pistols, and having looked at the 24/7 Taurus, I can say they are built very similar and field strip in the same fashion.

But if you want a range gun, be sure that you can adjust the sights. It would be quite frustrating to purchase a gun intended for target practice and not be able to adjust the sights. Don't think it will be an issue with your selections except the 24/7. I know they have fixed sights, not sure on the rest.

good luck,
jeepmor

Ergonomics, price, reliability...CZ75, SA XD, FN HiPower from CDNN...
any order for either list, the choice comes down to the feel in your hand.

CZ is the best deal you can find. Czech out a PO1, or a standard CZ75. You can usually find them in that price range, and worth far more.

No Glock, has to be a 9mm? Well pard, that leaves you to the CZ-75 if you want a truly great 9mm handgun. The P-01 and SP-01 are also VERY good and VERY nice to shoot.

A Sig would be a third or fourth choice, Taurus 9X series fourth or fifth, Beretta after that.

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like the CZ is pretty popular around here. I really like the P-01, seems like a quality firearm. Will accuracy be much worse on the P-01 compared to the 75? what about a P-01 compared to a Walther p-990? Sorry about all the questions, thanks for helping me out.

Ask away - I can get 1-2 inch groups with handloads at 25 yards(yards, not feet), two hand standing weaver stance. Some people can do much better than that. The PO1 is simply the best pistol I have ever owned.

CDNN Hi Power for $399.00 brand new.

These $400 CDNN HPs have been gone for several days. The only $400 9mm HPs that I know of are the ones with the SFS system sold by Reed1911. So don't write off the HP yet. poppy

Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated. I decided to hit the range later today to check some of these guns out. Will especially try to get my hands on a CZ, looks like they are definately a great buy. Thanks again.

All of the above will do exactly what you ask of it,including the much maligned Sigma as long as it's a VE.The BHP is a classic that deserves its status but there are enough great pistols out there that if possible,go try out as many as you can and make a choice from what you like. I personally would go with a used SIG and since you showed interest in the Pro would tell you to give one a try.Mine ( in .357) has been outstanding and it has been the most accurate of any SIG,with the best trigger,of any I've owned. For whatever reason some snobs tend to look down on them as "not real SIG's" but IMO they are the best of the service sized polymer breed.

BHP.

Proven!

I am fifty years old. I was born with a 9 shot High Standard Revolver awaiting my arrival. Age 6 I fired my first centerfire handgun - Gov't Model of the 1911.
Shortly followed by a Model 10, then the BHP.

I have stayed with these and a few other Firearm Preferences all this time; Truly these are that well Proven.

Besides after all these years - I still have yet , nor will I ever- Master any of my preferences. Be it handgun, rifle or shotgun preferences.

I think the Sig P226 would meet all of your needs except concealability. The Sig is really thick like most of the other guns on your list.
The Pro will probably be a little lighter and may be a little thinner. I have shot both, and like both, but I have never compared them side by side.

I like my 2 CZ SP-01's so much I may have to change my user name. As much as my USP9F's will propbably never fail, they just don't fit my hand quite the same as my CZ's.

I'll be the dissenter here, I've never shot a CZ with a decent trigger pull. Only 3 different guns, so maybe some of them have a decent trigger...

I recommend, in order of my preference:

Sig P226
BHP
XD
