Background: My wife is opening her very own retail store here in DFW in about 3 weeks. In preparation she took and passed her CHL this last Saturday. This is a big step for her as she was raised by anti’s and it took her a few years to do the 180.

My wife is good friends with the wife of a coworker. I would be friends with coworker (he is just a little older than myself), except he is a hard core sheeple, and must worse, actively voices his disapproval of any non-sheeple behavior. He is an engineer, and probably the most square headed of them you’ll ever meet. All his disapproval of non-sheeple behavior, therefore, is based on the most “logical” of foundations.

Said coworker stops by Monday morning to shoot the bull, opening up with “Anything interesting going on?” to which I respond that my wife took and passed her CHL, only missing 15 points on the shooting test.

He recoils a bit with major body language and “Oh My My! Does she actually have a gun?” “Yes” I respond, “We got her a 9mm and it’s the gun she qualified with. But she is agitating a bit now for a larger caliber so we will see what we do when she masters the 9mm.”

“Oh” he physically recoils harder now. “I think 9mm is more than adequate, a larger caliber is just going to have more stopping power.” To which I have to laugh and respond with “Isn’t that the point of a self defense weapon?” “Oh, I guess, but I think a 9mm is more than enough”.

Then he moves topics. “So she will have a gun in the store?” “Absolutely, it will be on her at all times.” Then he asks, “Will you post one of those no guns signs on the door?” I have to give him the dumbest look I can muster (genuinely being shocked at the question) “No. What’s the point in that? Criminals aren’t going to respect the sign and why do I care if the law abiding carry guns?”

“Oh” again but seemingly pondering a new concept in thought – criminals won’t obey a sign on the door?

And with that he buzzed off. Because of the relationship between our wives he knows about our mindset, which he treats most of the time with some sort of bemusement at our foolishness. Because they are both dyed in the wool sheep (please excuse the pun), I never try to justify anything we do or challenge their thinking, as I figure it will just re-enforce his thinking that I am nuts. But this one time it was nice to be able to challenge his obviously foolish notions for a change.

I think you handled the conversation very well.

People like this can't be converted all at once. The best way to get them moving in the right direction is by standing your ground, backing up your position with reason and facts, and always being civil.

You did all of that, so mission accomplished.

Take the dude shooting and show him the basics of firearm safety. I did that to an "educator" a few months back and educated him beyond his wildest dreams.

Although he hasn't come fully around, he did stop calling me the NRA gun nut.:D

The boy genuinely had a good time of it all but asked me not to mention it to his wife who is also an "educator".

I took actually took him shooting years ago when a group of coworkers went to the range. His sheeple believe is deeper than a trip to the range. Not having ever actually discussed the source of his criticism, I can only read between the lines.

I think the source of his “logic” is that nothing happens to those who live right/being Christian means that you are immune from all trouble. If trouble comes, which will never happen in DFW, THEY will protect/look after you, should you ever need it. Self defense is the wrong goal as non-professionals can only hurt themselves or the innocent.

You would have to see their marriage in action to really understand how square his head is.

I love when you see the point of enlightenment when this fact sinks home in the indoctrinated.

Often, the most intelligent people are the ones that couldn't find their own butts even if they had a big ole "butt" map.

First of all Kindrox, congratulations to your wife and yourself on your entrepeneurial venture.
I guess sometimes people like to let the "system" think for them. Odd that he's an engineer and can't come to the logical conclusion.
I do believe in the concept of over-intellectualization. When that intercedes common sense, God help us.

Keep on him. A lightbulb may have turned on in his head.

My wife has owned a bakery/specialty restaurant for ten years. She is definitely not into guns but sees their use and over the years has wacked a few snakes, a feral cat, and has no qualms about keeptin a 12 ga Rossi Stagecoach gun loaded by the bed on her side when I'm gone overnight. We compromised for the restaurant and I got her a S&W airweight. The plan is if someone comes in she is uncomfortable with for her to get into the storage room and lock the door. This is three steps to the left from behind the counter. The gun is lying unholstered on a shelf. I check it weekly. The bad folks can take whatever they want out front but if they try to open the door then first shot is through the door. If they continue to come in then she will know they intend harm. She will not have another choice then.
