To the Publishers and Editors of Playboy:

I've long been a fan of your publication, as well as a long time subscriber. Certainly I fawned over the beautiful depictions of the feminine form, but I also read your articles, letters, and columns. You have always put forth a very slick and wonderful publication, one that I looked forward to receiving every month.

I recently read through your 50th anniversary issue. Congratulations on acheiving this historic landmark, few publications of any note put out as many issues. As I was reading through it, I found "Battle Zone," and began to read it. I found parts of your essay to be right on. In fact, I think I could stand with you on just about all of the topics that were covered, with, of course, the exception of one:

Gun Control.

I find it sadly amusing that a publication espousing individual rights would be so anti-gun. What you seem to pass off as "reasonable gun control," i.e. gun registration, is hardly that. They say those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Look into the history books and see what gun registration has always been the precursor of. (Simple answer: confiscation. More complex answer: genocide.) Crime in general has been falling in this nation, ask yourself why it has started to rise in the UK and Australia? Obviously you won't care what I have to say, as you have your own agenda. We're all adults that have made up our minds, you yours, and me mine.

Of course, understand that espousing political and social viewpoints will get you pats on the back from some quarters while getting you estranged in others. To take a stand is notable, and for that I applaud you. To take a stand in direct opposition to my belief, however, makes me wish to not support your publication. While you simply espousing a viewpoint contrary to my own might make me just ignore you, the fact that you donate monies to such causes as HCI makes me wish to terminate my subscription, effective immediately.

I feel that my money is perhaps better served by purchasing a publication such as Maxim. (Interestingly, named after an inventor of some note. Among his inventions: the first self powered, crew served machine gun.) I still hold your publication in high regard when it comes to photography, writing, and layout. Perhaps I will miss seeing your publication in my mailbox; I'm rather certain you won't miss my money.

I subscribed to Playboy for about 25 years. I enjoyed it, but in the last few years they became increasingly PC, always espousing 1st amendment rights and at the same time, taking a left-wing stance on gun control.

I dropped my subscription and when they called, told them why.

I did the same with Esquire magazine a few years ago. Sent them a letter as to why....their support of HCI and not being able to comprehend what "gun control" was all about. Got a snotty reply from their editor. Have never picked up another copy.

Hugh has always been a leftist. He has to. It goes along with the concept of his magazine. I am a conservative to the point of libertarian, but I read all points of view. The gun thing in Playboy is correctly labeled as P.C., and I don't agree either. Still, I'll bet the security staff at the mansion is packing big time and I wouldn't be surprised if Hef has a piece (and I mean a gun) nearby to ward off the always potential kook factor.

Regardless, Playboy captures the absolute best of the "girl next door" and I don't care about the politics. I enjoy the magazine for it's tasteful pictorials, sometimes interesting articles, fascinating even if I don't always agree with interviews, and all around class and quality for a men's magazine.

You can take those subscription postcards that fall out and white out the subscription details and put your message on there and use there bulk rate to send your message to them.

Don't throw the TV out of the window. I have DirectTV and get the FOX News Channel. It is a refreshing change. The receiver box records the stations I watch for ratings so I get great joy out of never watching the liberal networks. If I did not have a TV I would not get to register my vote.

playboy has been putting out anti-gun material since the 60s.-Playbody Advisor material about the badness of guns and cartoons depicting shooters as having little short wee-wees.

Hefner comes from the literarary tradition that was prominent before world war II and into the fifties. You had to be a Red to be chic and sophisticated and get drunk with Dos Pasos and Hemmingway.

One time, a long time ago, I was working with a bunch of womens libbers. They did not like the idea that I would read Playboy at lunch in my office, separated from them. When I quit my job, I still had an address and phone roster. Each one of the libbers got a free mag in the mail compliments of Playboy. But that was a ling time ago and I have forgotten who they were now. After that the women got louder in complainning and we have, what we have now.

Thanks for letting me relive my childhood.

Thom

Good of you to voice your opinion to the editor. Without such letters, our voice would never reach them; we all know how vocal the gun grabbers can be.

However, are you sure Maxim magazine is named after the Maxim machine gun and not just sharing the name?

Maxim is a word in and of itself as well, meaning a proverbial saying.

Great letter nonetheless.

Folks,

Do you really believe Playboy is PC in ANY way?? :)

Is it possible Hugh is once again offering his opinion? While it may differ from ours, he has proven for almost 40 years that PC isn't part of his agenda. Do a lil' search for the anti-pc campaigns he's bankrolled.

it would be nice if the people who are fighting to hang onto any one right would support others who were doing the same for another right. but the aclu gives about as much of a crap about gun rights as the typical gun owner cares if gays have the right to be married, etc.

drives me nuts sometimes.

I haven't read Playboy for years, but I still have an article that I Xeroxed out of a Playboy entitled something like, What the Founding Fathers Said About Guns or Gun Control or something like that.
Obviously it was right up my alley or I wouldn't have copied it.
I don't know when this was, but I would estimate over 10 years but less than 15 years ago.
The reason I copied it was to refute anti's. I figured that referencing a copy of The American Rifleman or something like that wouldn't have the same impact as showing them a reference from a mainstream magazine whose general content was not that of guns.

Heck, I dig the pics in SGN way more than Playboy anyways. :D

Better articles, too.

The only reason to buy the magazine is for the articles. If you just want pictures, the internet is the place to go.

Way to go fellas, now if you will just throw your T.V.'s out the window..................

This is assuming that I own a TV?? I haven't owned one for almost two years..

When you free yourself from TV, it's like giving oxygen to the brain..

As for Playboy, without exception maybe 10 year ago, the best articles of any magazines was from Playboy. The fact the pictures were tasteful was just a nice touch. But some of the best jokes I've ever read all from playboy.. sad, how things of quality have all gone downhill..

Good letter Jayman.

I dont remember seeing anything about guns in the magazine, but I wasnt a regular reader and the last one I remember reading was when Kelly Monaco was playmate of the month (mid 90s?). And although I read the mag, that centerfold is the only thing I remember...

I am amazed by those who decry the evil television. If you lack discipline and can't resist become a couch potato don't bame the TV-look in the mirror. A TV is an inanimate object. It's usefulness or lack thereof is subject to the whims of the operator-just like a gun!
