To the Publishers and Editors of Playboy:
I've long been a fan of your publication, as well as a long time subscriber. Certainly I fawned over the beautiful depictions of the feminine form, but I also read your articles, letters, and columns. You have always put forth a very slick and wonderful publication, one that I looked forward to receiving every month.
I recently read through your 50th anniversary issue. Congratulations on acheiving this historic landmark, few publications of any note put out as many issues. As I was reading through it, I found "Battle Zone," and began to read it. I found parts of your essay to be right on. In fact, I think I could stand with you on just about all of the topics that were covered, with, of course, the exception of one:
Gun Control.
I find it sadly amusing that a publication espousing individual rights would be so anti-gun. What you seem to pass off as "reasonable gun control," i.e. gun registration, is hardly that. They say those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Look into the history books and see what gun registration has always been the precursor of. (Simple answer: confiscation. More complex answer: genocide.) Crime in general has been falling in this nation, ask yourself why it has started to rise in the UK and Australia? Obviously you won't care what I have to say, as you have your own agenda. We're all adults that have made up our minds, you yours, and me mine.
Of course, understand that espousing political and social viewpoints will get you pats on the back from some quarters while getting you estranged in others. To take a stand is notable, and for that I applaud you. To take a stand in direct opposition to my belief, however, makes me wish to not support your publication. While you simply espousing a viewpoint contrary to my own might make me just ignore you, the fact that you donate monies to such causes as HCI makes me wish to terminate my subscription, effective immediately.
I feel that my money is perhaps better served by purchasing a publication such as Maxim. (Interestingly, named after an inventor of some note. Among his inventions: the first self powered, crew served machine gun.) I still hold your publication in high regard when it comes to photography, writing, and layout. Perhaps I will miss seeing your publication in my mailbox; I'm rather certain you won't miss my money.
