My mother was given a pass on a speeding ticket because she had a CCW license

Hard to believe, but apparently true. She says that she was pulled over for speeding. The cop came to her window and told her so, and asked to see her license. By freak accident, she didn't have her drivers license with her, and she explained that she must have left it at home even though she normally always has it with her. She says he was getting ready to write her a ticket when he noticed her CCW license in her wallet and asked what that was. She told him, and he looked at it and his attitude changed completely. He just gave it back to her and said, make sure to have your drivers license with you when you drive and watch your speed. Can you believe that? Who would have thought?

She's in her middle 70s, by the way. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. I thought it was very unusual, myself. Anyone else ever have anything like that happen? If anything, I assumed most cops would be less inclined to give you a pass if he saw a CCW license, but now I'm not so sure. And this happened in NY, not exactly a gun friendly State.

The officer was overtaken by the fact a woman in her 70s was CCW. What must he have been thinkin'?

There's nothing wrong with my 'neck of the woods' (Monroe County). The state police and sheriff here are CCW friendly. There could be a few bad cops on any force, but I never heard locally of anybody meeting one of them.

I've had troopers talk with me on the side of the road for a half hour about guns when they saw the pile in the back seat. None of them ever wrote me a ticket.

Cops at work say they're coming to my house if the SHTF.

Yes ... but I was never quite sure if it was just the CCW that tipped the scales, or if it was the fact that I'd followed all the rules (window down, inside light on, keys out, hands on steering wheel), or if it was because I apologized for speeding when he asked if I knew why he'd stopped me. Might have been all of them together.

But the CCW definitely had a positive effect.

Based on my experiences in my pre-CCW days, everything Pax mentioned helps the most.

I've only been stopped a few times since getting my permission slip, and the one time I got the ticket, it was wrote low.

the same thing has happened to me.
so far I haven't been written up just really chewed out bad because I wasn't carrying one time.
It can get really weird sometimes.

According to the wife, this happened not long ago: she'd earlier misplaced her driver license prior to leaving on a trip to Idaho; she was freaking out about it before leaving, and I told her, "Don't worry, make sure you have your CPL handy, it's got your driver license number on it." Of course she was pulled over near Ellensburg, WA on I-90 and when the trooper asked for her license, all she could offer him was her Washington state CPL. She also gave him her hospital ID and armed forces ID with photos; the trooper took it all back to his car, ran the license number, determined she in fact had a valid driver license and then asked her if she had a firearm with her and if so, what ... upon being told she was packing a .45, he said, "Please slow down; have a nice day," and let her go on her way ...

On the other hand, her next trip, she was pulled over on I-82, showed only her driver license, and was given a $116 speeding ticket ...

Interesting! I wonder if there is a larger pattern here. I thought it pretty odd when it happened to my mom, but maybe it's somewhat common.

That's a BIG +1!

2 trips, 2 pull overs for speeding? :)

With all due respect: I think I see her problem. She speeds! :neener:

I have not had a ticket in about 8 years - ever since I quit speeding (I really never saved much time that way), started stopping fully at stop signs (stop and count to 3) and quit running yellow lights (I now treat them as red lights - my only rule is that I have to slam on my brakes, I do not stop)!

It was just a matter of deciding to change my bad habits. Driving now seems so much more relaxing.

I got a verbal warning just a couple months ago. I had all my stuff out, didn't complain or hardly say anything. They took my stuff back to the car and then gave it back and a verbal about slowing down. I was happy since I was speeding and knew it.

Between that ticket and all the times I have bypassed a background check, I figure my CHL has paid for itself. (over and above the value of carrying) :)

Though I've been making an effort to 'stay off the radar' lately (no points in the last three years:D), I must say that informing the officer that I was armed, had a CHP, and following the interior lights on/motor off/window down, hands on the wheel/be polite & respectful drill has definitely gotten me some 'consideraton', and usually a few minutes chatting about tastes in firearms (I like SIGs, so do the VA St & Ffx Co police)

None of that helped me last night. Got pulled over for going twelve miles an hour over the speed limit. He had been following me in an unmarked car, and claimed that when the speed limit went from 60 to 50 I was, for a couple of seconds, speeding. I sirred him to death, was super cooperative, and all he did was reduce it by about $40, which is better than nothing, I guess. Still have a $120 ticket and three new points on my license. Not happy.

Hmmm, let's see...

Pulled over by PA State Troopers now 5 times since I have had my CCW...they have gotten me with the same thing each time..."failing to obey traffic device" and a $105.00 ticket, no points.

That's not very CCW friendly huh? Actually, consider this:

Each time, I was going a minimum of 22 miles over the posted limit, once 95 in a 55 interstate. :D

I know the CCW helped, here's why I know.

When I see the radar runner, and I am speeding, I pull over IMMEDIATELY. Even before they pull out to chase. I find the closest safe spot (never too far) and pull over.

I put the car in park, turn the engine off, put the keys on the dash, roll down both windows and hang my hands out of the driver's side door.

I say "sir" or "maam", but I don't kiss ass. I maintain a friendly demeanor, often cracking a joke or two when they ask me why I was speeding (i.e. 'do you know why I pulled you over?' - "yes sir, I'm an idiot and sped right past a State Trooper. I must have left my thinking cap at home.")

When they ask for my ID, I calmly state the following (we are not required to notify in PA).

Sir, I would like to inform you that I have a license to carry a concealed firearm in this state, and I am in fact exercsing that right at this time. My firearm is on my strong-side/right hip, which is also the side that my wallet and ID are on. My registration and insurance papers are in the glove box, I have 2 spare magazines (and another firearm sometimes) in that area. How would you prefer I proceed?

Now, they usually change their attitude after the joke, but once I inform them of my CCW, they ALWAYS relax (which is contrary to what I would have ever expected), or seem to, and advise me to retriece my wallet first and hand over the DL and CCW. I roll my right hip towards the driver's side window so the officer can see exactly what I am doing, and I move slowly but deliberately.

They go back and run then info, and always come back with the same thing "Sir, I wrote you up for failing to obey a traffic device, there will be no points on this. I just need you to sign, it is not an admission of guilt you may fight the citation.

My reply is always the same "Why would I fight it? I sped, I got nailed."

They then always tell me something to the effect of:

'I appreciate you notifying me of your concealed carry weapon' Please take it easy out here on the speed.

All but once they have also asked what I was carrying.

FYI: 2 borough cops stopped me for speeding during that time frame. One let me go, the other did the same thing the Troopers did.

And in each case, I have written a letter to their superiors commending the officers on their professionalism. Now I just gotta learn to stop speeding all the damn time!

Oh. I see I missed the order in which one needs to do these things.:what:
Carry permit FIRST, then on to the speeding ticket. Dang it! I messed up the order.:scrutiny: Maybe with any luck, I won't have to show either license in the near future.
