My New M70 .243 Win. Feel Like I Stole It—Almost.

Back during deer season of 2012, I wandered the isles of Bass Pro, in Auburn Hills, MI. I usually stop and look at the, okay…I lust at the rifles. Come-on, now, tell me your wife hasn’t caught you with a “wandering eye”!! We all look. It’s just some of us are honest about it. Well, as I was paying for some Hornady SuperFormance .270 Win, 130 grain SSTs, I saw a new Winchester Ultimate Shadow chambered in .243 Win. Now, I like the .243 Win, almost as much as I like the ol’ “Quarter-bores”. Don’t get me started about the .25-06 Rem. Said Ultimate Shadow was reduced to $499, a very good price indeed. Right now, these sell for about $650 in my area. Well, I didn’t have the extra cash at the time, and I needed to head back north to hunt. So, I wandered out.

About two weeks ago, perhaps three, I was back at Bass Pro. I had met up with Commander1971 to purchase some primers. BTW, he’s a good fella. He’s a homely critter to be certain! But a good fella. So, I paid him for the primers and decided to wander inside to see what ammo was available. Now, me being somewhat tired, I forgot to take a number to be waited on. No matter, I wandered to the ticket dispenser, and snagged a ticket. As I stood waiting to pay for some reloading supplies, I noted a little black rifle, and the tag, was a shocking, or eye-grabbing $399!!! Well, I waited my turn, and made sure no one else took home my newest girlfriend. I haven’t named her yet, but I will.

I asked the salesman why the rifle was so inexpensive, and he relied something to the effect that, “It’s been here for a couple of years and hasn’t sold. Nobody wants a .243 Win! And it’s our last Ultimate Shadow.” Well, just so happens I wanted a .243, and I had money…lotsa money on hand! So, I made the purchase. I also experienced my first ever electronic application for purchase. I found it strange, that Bass Pro does not do a background check for pistols if one has an MCPL, but does run a background check for all long guns. So, that’s the story of how my “wandering eye” for the steel “ladies” got me a new girlfriend.

I took her to the indoor range yesterday, and at 50 yards, 0.50 to 0.75 inch groups with Factory Federal 100 grain ammo was a pinch. I stole the scope off of my Super Grade .270 for the day just to be able to pull her trigger. Now, I’m also waiting for the Nightforce rail to arrive to be epoxied into place. Yes, you read that correct. I epoxy all of my rails, as well as red Lock Tite them. It makes it easy to slip on my Nightforce 12-42X56 to work up loads, then return to whatever scope I intend to use. I have my eye on a dandy Trijicon 3-9X40 AccuPoint for her. If not that, a dandy lil Leupold 2-7. Decision, decisions.

So, my point in posting this, while others are running around trying to find Ars, I’ve been running around looking for great deals on bolt-actions. I found this awesome deal and wanted to share with my fellow THRers. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. I'll do a follow-up after I take her to the 100 yard outdoor range this week.

The gun IS nice, but that's some heavy duty readin material in the background. Ya might want to keep them out of your pictures lest "Sniper" and "Monster Hunter" get you labeled as an extremist :D

Good reads all. Monster Hunter above all others. :D. Thanks for the post.
